My family and I had a great meal here... We'll be back. The restaurant is laid back and cool with excellent cuisine. The sun dried tomato with blackened shrimp appetizer with Cajun cream sauce was special. My son rated the Caesar salad very highly. I had the asparagus with crab soup. The soup was excellent and the crab plentiful. Our entrees were also very good. The crab cakes were really special... One of the best I ever had. The bouillabaisse was well prepared, fish all perfectly cooked. The fish tacos were good... Mahi mahi had a nice spice and cooked well. They were full of tomatoes and lettuce. They were a bit juicy and hard to eat. The cheese steak was also good... And we are from Philadelphia!! We were too full for dessert... But will try next time. The service was very good. They are serious about food. The wine and beer list are well chosen. We had a nice French Rose on special and my husband had a quad beer that he liked. Definitely will be back - and we bought the T-shirts (to prove it). Nice selection and styles for men and women.

We found this gem during our vacation on the outer banks thanks to Yelp. When we pulled into the restaurant however we were initially disappointed because of the location in a strip mall and contemplated going elsewhere. Thankfully we didn't! We were promptly greeted when we entered and seated shortly after. Our waitress was great and attentive the entire meal. She also allowed us to sample a few wines before buying an entire bottle thankfully. My boyfriend and I shared the appetizer of fried green tomatoes Neapolitan but wished we had both gotten our own since it was the highlight of the meal. We both had the entree of broiled crab cakes. My boyfriend is a huge crab cake fan and has eaten countless cakes all other the country and is still raving a week later about the Blue Moon crab cakes being the best he's ever had! Definitely worth a try. I on the other hand had never tried crab cakes; they were delicious! Dessert also looked delicious but we were too full to even attempt. We will for sure be returning on our next vacation!

First visit, had mahi fish and chips and fish tacos. thee fish was well cooked, and the chips just like boardwalk fries. Portion sizes were generous, enough to share for a normal appetite. Cole slaw was a bit bland though, and they were out of the key lime pie the waitress tried to sell us. But overall a good dini g experience.

I've been going to Blue Moon once a week every summer since they opened. I travel nearly an hour to eat there. Every single meal has been phenomenal. Never have I encountered an off night with the food or the service even during the busiest of times. They are top notch and deserve all of the accolades they get.

we come down here every time we're in the obx. great portions loaded with fresh seafood. excellent staff who are very accommodating for antsy toddler twins. haven't had a bad meal here & don't think it will ever happen... every single thing we've had we just absolutely enjoyed. you won't be disappointed.

Went here for lunch with my wife after meeting a real estate agent (who doesn't want to move to the beach?). Great service - we were seated within 5 minutes despite the dining room being full on our arrival. Full for lunch on a rainy September Thursday should tell you something. Food was excellent - shared the Jamaican jerk wings to story, then I had the fried oysters (big, juicy, perfect). My wide actually got the calamari appetizer as her lunch - she loved the delicate sauce, and even had a few of my oysters dipped in it. I liked the jalapeño remoulade that came with my platter. Wish I could have tried the soup the shrimp and grits, the buffalo shrimp, the Mahi BLT...the list goes on. Great food, good service, unique menu items.

Hour and a half wait but we were fortunate to get a spot at the bar. Excellent service. Fresh features are the way to go. Rockfish was amazing and homemade fries were yummy! highly recommend the scallop appetizer.

Ate lunch here. There was a 30 minute wait, but they will take your name and number so you can relax outside or look at the shops. I got a text message saying our table was almost ready and right when we got back they seated us. I was going to go with the Chick Decluck sandwich, but switched to the Shrimp "Not a Sandwich". I made a good choice. The "not a sandwich" was delicious and it got so much better when I got to the fried green tomato. I definitely recommend it. The fries were delicious as well. My boyfriend had the shrimp and grits and said he'd be happy with it as his last meal. The service was excellent as well!

This has been the best lunch on the island so far this week. The mahi BLT was as good as the other reviews suggested. Also, the art for sale was beautiful to look at while dining.

Service is fantastic! Friendly staff and the owner stopped by to make sure we were happy and satisfied. Started off with the savory fried empanadas (recommend). Had the beef brisket with blueberry smoke sauce for the main entree. The flavor was good, the blueberry taste had a bit of a bitter aftertaste, but the quality, cut (no fat chunks) and flavor was good.

I love this place. It is our favorite restaurant whenever we visit Nags Head. The service is great and the food is always so good!!! How do you make a cheesesteak taste that good?!!! I am sitting here obsessing about how many bottles of their hot sauce I need to order to sustain my addiction.

This restaurant's food is outstanding! We got there a 5:00 pm on a Thursday thinking we wouldn't have to wait but we still has over an hour wait, but it was well worth it! We had the angels delight and crab cakes and both were excellent! Definitely will be going back. Wish they would move to a larger facility.

A fantastic place to grab lunch or dinner. Haven't found anything that I didn't like yet. Really like the shrimp and grits. :)

  • South Riding M.

We had the shrimp grits also fried oysters on a salad. Wasn't my thing. Salad veggies weren't cut up small enough. Shrimp grits had too much liquid. Won't be returning. Look like they specialize in sandwiches based on what I noticed coming out of the kitchen.

This was a great place. Great beer selection and good selection of local seafood options (the waitress knew where my seafood was harvested... woo!!) The wait seemed pretty long (40 minutes for 3 of us), but we were lucky - seats were opening at the bar right when we arrived. Casual ambiance and located in a strip mall.

My absolute favorite place to eat on the Outer Banks! You may have a lengthy wait in the summer, but it is well worth it. Love the atmosphere, wait staff, and food! Everything is top notch.

  • Glenn N.

Crab cake was delicious. I ordered it broiled and was pleased that it was mostly crab with just a little binder to hold it all together. The sea bass was light and flakey without being dry. Layering the sea bass over kale and butternut squash was genius. We will be back again soon. Service was fast and polite.

I love this place!!!! I wish it was not over an hour from me because I would eat here on the regular! My mom was in town in September and I tried twice to get her here but the wait was so long we didn't have time, which I think is good because it means people wait to eat here and they are busy! She came back for the holidays and I was able to get her here finally for some lunch. We only waited about 10 mins. Our server was friendly. We ordered an app of Calamari which unfortunately was not very good and we sent back but I have had so many good meals here that it's not gonna ruin my opinion in this place. It was salty, the creamy sauce the Calamari was in was just over salted. It happens. Plus we were didn't pay attention that it was traditional calamari serve with red sauce. So our server took it back and offered us something else but we decided to just wait for our lunch. We both ordered the Mahi Mahi BLT which can I say was FANFRIGGINTASTIC! The fish was cooked perfect with huge pieces of bacon on a toasty bun. They offer a spicy sauce with it that I was unsure of so I asked for a side of it and a safe of their basil aioli which is amazing too. The sauce was great, I ended up using all of it! The fries are hand cut and cooked perfectly, ate all of those too and so did my mom!!!! All and all worth the wait to eat here!

Absolutely delicious and well worth the wait. This is a place you must dine at while in the outer banks!

We had a rather large party for dinner here our first night of vacation. We chose this place based on the reviews. First, let me say - it is not beach front dining. We had a bit a bit of a wait but they had someone playing the guitar outside and we could take our beer and wine out to listen to him play. He was great and took requests. The food was amazing! Every person in our party of 10 enjoyed their meals. My husband had the fish and chips. I had the fish special and we both thought it was amazing. The menu also clearly labeled things as gluten free including a flour less cake for dessert which was super dense and more like fudge but tasty. We would definitely go back!

    (5)
  • Sarah R.

The food was delicious. I raved about the crab cake for days. However, there was a bit of a wait, no waiting room space. DELICIOUS, just make sure you give yourself time to eat there.

We just moved to the Outer Banks, and discovered this place. Very pleased to learn it was open all year round. We've eaten here twice, and the same waitress waited on us. She remembered us, which was nice. Our water glasses and beer pints were always filled in a timely manner, which we really liked. I hate having to eat ice instead of drinking water--not a problem at this place! :) The seared scallop with seaweed salad appetizer is a big hit with us. I ordered the shrimp not-a-burger the first time--interesting combo of flavors with the fried green tomato in it. Second time I got the fish tacos--liked the tacos, but the beans and rice sort of missed the mark for me. My husband happily ate them for me. ;) He's gotten whatever fish sandwich was on special both times and has been very pleased. He also likes the fact that there's a decent selection of draft beer available. Since we're here in the middle of the season, it's pretty busy during regular dining times, so we've been coming in at off times--and the restaurant is still hopping! That tells me this place is good. This place will definitely become part of our regular restaurant rotation. Looking forward to our next visit!

Writing a review only because yelp suggested this restaurant for vegetarians. It is not. They will attempt to accommodate vegetarians, but that means removing the bacon and cheese off their salads (though you pay for the meat anyway, and the salads are pricey for what they are) or perhaps a pasta option (these not high quality). Blue Moon was a disappointment on other measures as well. Is true that the Outer Banks is a challenge for vegetarians, even more so for vegans, but this is not the place for vegetarians to dine unless perhaps seeking to accomodate fish and meat eaters in the group. Even then be prepared to pay $9 for a quite unremarkable salad of greens, cucumber, tomato, and onion.

For my husband and I, the food and service here was just ok, not bad, but not particularly memorable. We both had the flounder special, the fish was fresh and the fries were crispy but the coleslaw was really heavy on the mayonnaise and soggy, and none of it had much flavor until you put the spicy remoulade sauce on it. Maybe we made a mistake by not ordering the shrimp and grits but what we had seemed like you could get it at any decent fish restaurant. The wine we had was ok by again not terrific. Our biggest issue was that our service was very lackluster, our server seemed distracted and wasn't very attentive or friendly but I'm sure there are servers there that do a great job. The plus side to this place is that it is open on Sunday and Monday when many other OBX restaurants are closed.

I would like to give 3 1/2 stars but that's not option so 3 Stars it is. My first visit to Blue Moon was in September of 2013. My boyfriend and I were seated quickly even though it was pretty busy. Our waitress never smiled at us the entire time and acted annoyed by us being there. I assumed she was having a really bad night but I just can't shake this original experience there. I had the scallop appetizer and another appetizer as my meal and my boyfriend had the fish special of the night. The dishes we had were awesome. I just felt like we were in the twilight zone b/c our waitress was so unfriendly so it made the experience bad. I have been in the service industry for 16 years and the only thing I could think of, of why our waitress was not happy with us was b/c we didn't order alcohol (therefore check will be smaller). I left over a 20 % tip anyway and a note for the waitress with a smiley face to cheer up. Moving Forward to July 2014. I have now moved to the OBX for the summer to work and live and work less than a mile from the Blue Moon. We came for an early dinner around 4pm and were sat immediately . Our server was very nice. I had the Shrimp and Grits and they were delicious. I can't remember what Brian had but we also had 2 of the homemade desserts. One Key Lime Pie and another with some sort of bourbon infused in it and they were both spectacular. We now live in Raleigh and will be visiting the OBX in a few weeks and am not sure if we will visit again but I do like the food there a lot. Service may vary.

I really like this place and enjoyed the food. It was my boyfriend and I first time dining there. The staff was pleasant and the wait was not long at all. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the bartender/waitress. She was very friendly. I ordered the shrimp and grits. My boyfriend ordered a burger and fries with a pickle on the side. They had an extensive wine menu. The waitress offered dessert, however we were stuffed. I definitely recommend it.....

There are literally 6 tables in the bar for dinner guests. Additionally, the place is managed by angry locals who treat vacationers with rude comments and dismissive attitudes. Avoid this whole in the wall and try someplace else.

This is the place to eat when in the area!! I had the shrimp and grits and DEFINITELY one of the best meals I had while visiting the area! Sooooooooooooo YUMMY!!! Go! Go! Go! And the bartender was super NICE and FRIENDLY too! Yay for a great meal!!

  • Rebecca G.

Reviews were right - you're going to wait no matter when you go. The wait was supposed to be over an hour, but after 30 minutes 2 seats at the bar finally got freed up. Everything we ate we liked and the food was done well. I would return to this restaurant, and that says a lot for the restaurants down here. The cheese steak was awesome and the oysters were delicious, too.

Once again Blue Moon rose above and beyond for a fabulous meal. The shrimp and grits were as delicious as before and quite an ample dish. The scallop appetizer was wonderful. I hardly never order scallops but we trusted Jessie our server at the bar and gave them a try. Succulent, sweet and not over cooked! Perfect! I'm so glad we have found a pearl at the beach in the Blue Moon. Our new place for deliciousness.

On our way back up from Buxton stopped in for lunch! Wow they know what they are doing! I grew up in Baltimore and have a high bar for well cooked seafood. The seared scallops were awesome! ..fresh and on a bed of seaweed salad. What a great surprise!

First time coming to this restaurant at the Outer Banks. Hands down, one of the best places to eat! Great food, great service, and great atmosphere! We ordered Oysters Rockefeller, scallops, and the fish and chips. Everything was cooked to perfection. We sat at the bar and our service was outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant!!

Blue moon grill is hands down the best food I've eaten in Outer Banks. Trip Advisor and Yelp did not fail us in finding this place!! We came in and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender came over right away and was super cool and suggested this strawberry margarita frozen concoction special they had that day. It turns out it was delicious and went down a little too quickly. We ordered the mahi mahi BLT sandwiches. They were unbelievably good - Perfectly cooked, fresh cut fries, a remaulade sauce to go with it. Our friend ordered the wings which had delicious seasoning to the point you didn't even want to dip them into the great looking sauce that accompanied them. For desert, the bread pudding was unreal and topped the whole experience off. You can't really go wrong with this place!

Amazing lunch today....tomato basil crab soup, blackened crab cakes with no filler! Chunks of crab! Fabulous service! Delicious Bloody Mary! Definitely added to our favorite spots in the OBX!

  • Santana D.

OMG, I had the blackened Mahi BLT and believe me it was the best BLT I have ever had! A girlfriend of mine from college works there and highly recommended it! But seeing as I adore seafood I had to give it a try and it didnt dissapoint the fish was tender a flaky the bacon crisp the tomato and lettus fresh.. The only thing I changed was I added grilled pineapple to my dish which was just heaven!

We only had a short wait to eat at Blue Moon on an October Friday night around 6:00. Staff was extremely friendly, and they have a clever paging system that messages you on your iPhone. Menu is a combination of traditional Outer Banks fare and some more adventurous chef specials. For appetizers, we had the calamari, which was recommended, although we try to eat local catch and this was probably frozen. But it was well-prepared, and the homemade sauce was especially good! My partner ordered a stuffed flounder that was accompanied with an acorn squash with roasted veggies inside. The squash was great, but the flounder was undercooked and we had to send it back. The staff was very apologetic and professional - replaced his flounder with a crab cake, and charged for the crab cake and not the flounder (significantly lower price). I had the tilefish, which is a local fish, white flesh and delicate flavor, fried lightly in almost a tempura-type batter - on a bed of baby greens with goat cheese. DE-LISH! This would be a good restaurant for small parties and couples. The place is small. And there are some outdoor picnic tables on a small deck to have a glass of wine while you're waiting. The decor is fun, with local art on the walls. Located in a strip shopping center, this is not a restaurant with a view. The locals like it, but vacationers might prefer a place that's more scenic or has room for larger parties.

Absolutely fabulous meal, highly recommend the fish and chips. The jalapeño remoulade was a delicious accompaniment to the mahi mahi. Will come again and again. Recommended by locals.

Outstanding. We have been coming down twice a year for ten years and have tried almost every place (if that is possible). This place has a fantastic diverse menu and everything was great. We had the fish and chips, shrimp and grits, shrimp, not a burger. Really great.

  • K K.

Wow! Great food and fast service. The wait staff was so friendly and we were nicely greeted at the door. Very welcoming. I had the Caribbean pulled pork sandwich. It was so moist and full of flavor. Delicious!! My fiancé had the fish and chips. Nice portions. The jalapeño remoulade sauce was so tasty. Will definitely be back when in town next. A must stop when in OBX.

  • Jim R.

I had the Shrimp and Grits which were without a doubt the best I have ever had. My wife had a marinated portabello mushroom with sautéed vegetables and a goat cheese risotto. Both meals were excellent and the service was outstanding. Well worth a return trip.

  • Jeffery P.

Nice stop. Almost missed due to poor driving, lovely area, great food. Deeply enjoyed the Oyster Rockefeller, so deep was the enjoyment it became existential. Ordered Caribbean Pulled Pork as main order, also moved to cry about my potty training. Great time, great service.

On my visit to the Outer Banks, my boyfriend and I came here twice. Both times I was sooooooo happy with the quality of food I got. Service was great too, but the food was so good. A month later and I am still craving the goat cheese risotto I ordered. The first time we came in, we sat down right away, got our food and we loved it. The second time, we had a long 45 minute wait, but we sat at the bar, had a good drink and dove into our food. The fish was incredibly fresh and the risotto was seriously so good that my boyfriend told me I had to learn to make it so when he got home we could have it. The drinks were nice and strong and when the hot tatis werent hot enough they kindly heated them up some more which made them perfect! Cant wait to go back!

We ate here for lunch our first day at the beach. The food and service were excellent. We intended to eat there again before we left, but our friends selected another restaurant. We should have gone back to Blue Moon. Highly recommended.

Okay so we only went out to eat once while in Nags Head but the food, service, and drinks were awesome! I wanted the Crabcake sandwich but was scared not to order the shrimp and grits after all of the great reviews. So I split both w my sister. Here's how the meal went: We heard it gets packed so get there early w our large party of 16ish. Showed up at 4:30, sat almost immediately. There was no outdoor live music yet. We had 6 kids w us, this can be a challenge. Best. Service. Ever. Not only polite and prompt but also thought about things like asking if we wanted the kids' drinks refilled right away or if we should wait (since they all act like they're in a chugging contest). Ordered a pirate painkiller drink. Yummmm. Got another, duh, don't miss out. Calamari: meh. Worst calamari I've had but still decent. If you're getting an app do not miss out on the scallops. The calamari sauce was not great. Shrimp and grits. Sooo good but pretty heavy for beach food. My personal taste. Also a personal annoyance of mine. Remove the f'ing tails! Seriously, I'm paying you to cook my food. I expect to not have to work on my plate. It's like wedge salads, WTF is that about?! Crabcake sandwich= best I've ever had and I'm obsessed. I don't think there was ANY filler. Should have just gotten that. Kids were all pleased w their grilled cheese, fried fish, and chicken fingers. Fish tacos were said to be good too. When I go back: pirate painkiller, scallops, crab cake sandwich fried mmmmmm

Food drinks and atmosphere were all fun. Didn't like the hour wait to get in but it was August at the beach. I recommend this for anyone staying in Nags Head because it is local, but well worth the trip for those staying in outlying areas.

Pros: - The food is excellent and the portions are huge. My family had the cheesesteak, fish tacos, and kids spaghetti. All are highly recommended. Even the coffee was great, which is a rarity in American restaurants (no offence, USA). - The service was terrific. The servers were very attentive and provided good recommendations when asked. Everyone was super-friendly. - The atmosphere was very comfortable. There's seating for groups as well as a bar area for pairs or singles that showed sports. Cons: - The ambient music was a bit on the loud side. Otherwise, no problems. - We beat the rush, but the wait soon got longer and longer. Try to make it early for dinner, or else you might be waiting a while. Overall: A great place for terrific food at Nags Head. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing meal here to celebrate our last night on our OBX vacation! Between the burnt orange margarita, the fish tacos, the shrimp and grits and the tuna...we were in heaven! We had to wait 45 minutes, but it was well worth the wait!

  • Don D.

Desk clerk at hotel said it was the best but there would be a wait. She was right on both counts but it was well worth the wait. The food and drinks were outstanding. My wife is VERY picky about crab cakes and she said these were the best she ever had. My fish and chips were excellent. Some of the best fried Mahi Mahi I have had and the fries were delicious. We finished off with a bread pudding for my wife and coconut custard pie for me which were great as well. We will return before we head back home.

We had a group of 10 and this was one of the few places that could accommodate us. I had the shrimp and grits and they were very good. I liked the addition of the fire roasted tomato. Everyone around me, got the crab cakes and said they were good. Would visit again if we find ourselves back in Nags Head.

Blue Moon is listed as the #1 restaurant in all of the Outer Banks on TripAdvisor, has 4.5 stars on Yelp, and rumor has it that Nina Zagat herself gave birth on their expo station. I am totally perplexed as to what justifies this hoopla. We had dinner at Blue Moon on our first night in town. It is a relatively small family restaurant place with kitschy/nautical decorations. None of that is bad in any way, but one would assume that the orgasmic ratings must therefore be due to the food. We started with an appetizer special - pork belly and french toast. I suppose this should have been expected, but it was WAY too sweet to be an appetizer. The french toast was battered and covered in a thick maple/caramel sauce. It was great on its own, as was the pork belly, but together it tasted like a savory dessert (which it would have been better as, even with the pork). Given how heavy (and heavy handed) the dish was, it wasn't quite as sophisticated as it was trying to be. For dinner, I got the grilled wahoo, which was well cooked and seared but underseasoned. The dish came with coconut rice sitting in a lemongrass/coconut broth that was absolutely incredible. The missus got fish tacos. Oh how people rave about the fish tacos on these review sites. They were unremarkable and mushy, especially as the sauces/juice disintegrated the soft taco shell. As compared to the even more kitschy restaurants in the area, this was certainly a nice meal that pushed the envelope in some respects. There are many places nearby that just serve burgers, chicken tenders and seafood, and this, in retrospect, was a nice break from that. But this was not fine dining, nor one of those vacation restaurants that you remember for years to come.

This is one of our favorite spots and, once again, we were not denied an outstanding dining experience. Extra special thanks to our server, Wendy, who was on the money with her suggestion for my husband - the shrimp and grits. Although some have asked, why would you ask a server what to order as they don't have your taste. My answer is always that a great server wants you to truly enjoy your meal and know their tip depends on it to some extent. Beyond her suggestions, her service was bar none. She made our dining experience a complete pleasure. I decided to order the scallops and seaweed appetizer, along with a side salad, as my dinner. The scallops were prepared to perfection. They were clearly plated at the precise moment that I can never find when I make them at home! The BEST scallops I've EVER had. Seriously, if you're down in the OBX, you have GOT to make a stop here. Do keep in mind they do not take reservations and if you go after 5:30, be prepared to wait. They'll page you on your cell phone when you're table is ready. Works well! The staff there run this place like a fine-tuned machine. Super friendly and efficient. Take Wendy's advice - don't miss out on the shrimp and grits!

If you need to eat out in Nags Head, this is where you go. Despite all the glowing reviews for many of the local eateries, this place really distinguished itself with its fair prices and tasty food. There's a reason why it fills up moments after its doors open at 11:30am; it seems to be the only good place to grab a bite. Rather than riding on the wave of mediocrity offered by their competition, they stand out on their own merits. Highly recommended.

My daughter and I took a day trip from Virginia Beach and after some hunger-inducing sight-seeing we decided on Blue Moon, and we were SO glad we did! A rainy early evening, we timed our arrival perfectly and were able to be seated at the bar immediately! I love fresh fish and the flounder I ordered was the biggest and freshest I've ever had. My daughter ordered a crab cake that just melted in your mouth. Great service, and a great atmosphere as well. If you're down in the Nags Head area, this HAS to be on your list!!!

This literally was 2 of the best meals of my life. My husband and I went there 2 days consecutively (and would have gone more, but it was our last 2 days of vacation). Just 5 stars all around. The waiter was great. The food-EXCELLENT!! We both tried the shrimp and fried green tomato sandwich ("shrimp not-a-burger) and the mahi mahi BLT. My husband tried the amberjack sandwich. They have mainly daily specials and everything is fresh.Prices are very reasonable for the quality. Can't recommend this place enough and said we live so far from it!!!

I went by this restaurant, read the reviews on yelp on decided to try it. I am sooo glad I did. What a great place. A real gem. The inside atmosphere is great. It was colorful, clean, inviting, and casual. The hostess was pleasant and sat us right away. Our waitress was attentive and provided excellent service throughout the meal. We shared the sweet potato and crab soup. I had the "it's not a burger" shrimp burger with fried green tomato. I wanted the Rockfish special but it was sold out. Obviously I wasn't the only one that thought it sounded amazing. The food was delicious! I am still dreaming about that soup. My entree was very good too. The prices were very reasonable Hours later, my friend and I both said that our mouths & bellies were still happy from lunch. All future meals in the Outerbanks will be compared to this place.

We spent last week in OBX and the Blue Moon Beach Grill was our favorite place to eat!! We got there early, beat the crowd and the food & service was excellent. I had the Mahi Mahi , my husband had the seafood pasta and my sons cheese steak sandwich was HUGE. All very delicious!! I only wish we would have found the place earlier in the week so we could have gone back a few more times! We will definitely be visiting Blue Moon next year!

While down our honey moon in the Outer Banks we were told to check out the Blue Moon Beach Grill. It was a little hard to find but we are glad we did. The service was good and the food was great. It was a little loud but it was to be expected for a smaller size restaurant that was clearly popular! I had the Shrimp & Grits and my husband had the Fish and Chips. Both dishes were perfect. My husband said the Fish and Chips were the best he had ever had. I would have to agree, it pretty much fell apart in your mouth-which means it was truly fresh! I am a sucker for Shrimp and Grits. I was not disappointed. I definitely recommend it for lunch or a casual dinner out.

Another great visit to Blue Moon. Even during the off season the placed is packed at lunch. Our server Wendy was very attentive throughout the meal. Can't go wrong w/ a great restaurant hidden in a strip mall.

While the blue moon cafe may have good food, a lot can be said of their customer service. The older woman at the counter made a huge deal about seating our incomplete party when we offered to order starters and pre order our children's lunches while we waited for them to arrive. She then sat an incomplete party ahead of us. Next she lied to her floor manager about it while they sat in the corner to get their story straight. As a private detective and investigator, my husband and I are trained to know when people are lying and trying to get their stories together. Nice try, blue moon, but we will never eat here again.

Rolled into town and right over to this spot as our whole crew was starved and we knew Blue Moon killed it on Yelp. We had a wait, but the bar got us an order of really tasty fries. Food and service were excellent even though they were jammed. They make an effort on their menu and with some homemade sauces that are top notch. Would definitely recommend.

Great place to stop in for lunch. The casual atmosphere made for a nice, relaxing beach break. The mahi-mahi sandwich was excellent..great flavor, crispy roll, bacon and cheese--great substitute for a burger. The fries were tasty--thin and crunchy--just how I like them. The spinach salad with a feta vinaigrette was also very good--candied walnuts, bacon pieces, pears and onions--great flavor combo. My only complaint is that it was a little too small for the price ($12--no added meat). My sister ordered the portabella sandwich and really enjoyed that as well. We sat at the bar so I can't really say much about the service but they were definitely a little slow. We waited a good 25 minutes for our food which seems crazy for a small little lunch spot...but I think it was worth the wait. Great place!

Exceptional. Awesome shrimp and grits, mahi blt was yummy, kids fish was delicious. Even my non seafood/fish eating husband really enjoyed the steak and cheese!!

SERVICE: Arrived around 8pm, and was pretty annoyed upon learning that there was an estimated 75 minute wait for our party of 5. But we decided to wait it out anyways. After about 30 minutes, we reconsidered and were about to leave; but we checked back in with the host to see if there was anything she could do for us. And she did! 5-10 minutes later, we were seated. So kudos to the host. As for our server...nothing amazing, but she did a fine job. It was pretty hard to hear her in the fairly loud bar since she was a low talker. ENVIRONMENT: Blue Moon does have a pretty sweet setup; namely, that you're allowed to drink beer and wine outside where they have a bunch of picnic tables. Inside...there's a bar, some nice artwork and quotes on the walls, tables for 15-20 groups, and a slightly visible kitchen (which I think is cool that they've made a little accessible/transparent). FOOD: As for the food, I had the Beach Burger with a substitute of grilled vegetables (instead of french fries). It was pretty fantastic. Others at my table had the Mahi Mahi BLT sandwich, Chuck-deLuck chicken sandwich, Philly Cheesesteak with homemade cheese sauce and fries and Fish Tacos w/ rice and beans. One random and very cool thing...we wanted some mint leaves for our drinks; so we asked one of the bartenders for some. He said, "Oh sure, let me go get you some from our garden!" So we learned that they actually grow some of their own herbs and vegetables! That is just excellent.

This place is great, Staff is on the ball and the food is WONDERFUL, prices are reasonable, iv never had a bad meal here. Iv come here every-time iv gone out to OBX, mostly for lunch and it always tastes fresh and cooked like you ask, they are easy with substitutions and very friendly. Burgers are great as-well as seafood and even down to simple things like sweet potato fries ... Hit the spot, check it out!

Great food! The staff is very friendly and attentive. They are busy! This means longer wait to be seated and wait for food but it is worth it! My hubby and I have date night here every year. Love the cheese steak!

My family and I ate at the blue moon on our way out from the outer banks, and I must say it was exceptional. The service was great, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. I had the Mahi Mahi blt which was excellent alongside the jalapeño marmalade. My mother ordered a crab bisque that tasted very good as well. Overall a great dining experience that I would recommend.

We stopped by on a road trip for some coffee and a small bite. We had the sea scallops and seaweed salad along with the calamari. It was all fantastic. Side note - they calamari comes IN the sauce. Next time we'd request it separate but it was still delicious! :) Kimberlee our server was awesome as well. She was extremely attentive and friendly!

  • Lan-Dinh N.

My husband and I really enjoyed our meals here. The appetizers we tried were the blackened shrimp with goat cheese and fried green tomato and the scallops on seaweed salad. Both were top notch. My husband ordered the calamari salad which he liked and rated four stars. My soft shell crab sandwich was also a four star meal in my opinion. It was yummy but I only ate half of it due to the heavy breading. The best part was the atmosphere and friendly service. We left a nice tip for our friendly waitress.

  • Brandon M.

This place had great reviews so we gave t a try. What an awesome place to eat! We had calamari for an appetizer, 2 steak and cheese subs, Maui Maui btl and fish tacos. The food was fantastic and our server was great! My only advice is share a plate!!

    (5)
  • Simple S.

Mediocre at best. Had lunch here today and don't recommend. Had the calamari - edible but nothing special. Then shared the crab cake sandwich - more of the same, adequate. Atmosphere was okay, but placed at worst table in the place (practically in the kitchen). Suggest trying someplace else.

Driven by this place for years when I'm in Nags Head every summer but never stopped in. Did today and I'm so glad!! Food was awesome and well worth the visit, but the staff is amazing. Pretty busy, full (full service) bar with one bartender. Anna was killing it!! - and everyone was helping each other knock it out. Enough said.

My boyfriend and I had never been to The OuterBanks, and traveled that way for a bit of a vacation and to celebrate his birthday. We stumbled upon this amazing restaurant one evening. Not only was the service outstanding, the food was delicious and the atmosphere lively. Being from New York, I have seen it all, and probably tasted it all. 6 months later we are still raving about how good this place actually was! Recommend the Pineapple Chicken Sandwich!

  • Kevin S.

Went here twice during a recent stay in the Outer Banks. Both times, we had fantastic service all around, and the food was excellent. The specialty cocktails were delicious as well (if you're reading this, PLEASE make the kiwi margarita a regular item.)

  • Rory O.

To be honest, I was disappointed. Reading the reviews I was pretty excited, but the food didn't impress. We shared a black bass special served with a crab succotash , the beans were hard and the fish was flabby. We also shared the fried oysters, one of my favorite foods, these were not very good. The fryer oil tasted old, spoiling the oysters and the french fries. The coleslaw was the worst we have ever had. It honestly tasted like some ingredients were missing. On the other hand the Caesar salad was delicious. We sat at the bar and had some great service from two fantastic bartenders, so not a total throw away.

The Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Napoleon was amazing! Is highly suggest it. This restaurant also has a good beer selection for a smaller venue. I had the portobello burger with sautéed vegetables as a side all good.

I really want to give it 4 stars, but it's tucked away in the corner of a strip mall and just misses the mark because of that. FOOD- I'll give it 4 stars there. we couldn't decide between fish n chips and the fried oyster po boy. Glad we got both!! They were so delish. Hands down- best fish and the chips were pretty good too- fresh cut (slightly too crispy). You could actually taste the freshness of the fist and it wasn't all batter fried up. The fish was so good! Had to wait - thought we wouldn't see it was like 1:30- after the lunch rush, or so we though. Worth it and we'll definitely go back next time were in Nags Head.

An undiscovered treasure. If you like to eat at the out of the way places where the locals eat when you are on vacation, this is the place for you. Ate lunch here with the family and the in-laws, and everyone was happy. All the seafood tasted fresh. We were sitting next to the prep counter where the orders come out, and EVERYTHING that came out looked good. Good value for the money. Worth seeking out--tucked into one corner of a strip mall.

  • Josh B.

Very much enjoyed our dinner. Highlights were the fried green tomatoes appetizer, side caesar salad (with bacon!), and chocolate pecan pie dessert. Mahi mahi BLT and fish tacos were also pretty good. Probably worth the long wait, but feel like they could fit more people with a little effort and creativity.

  • Melissa M.

Excellent! We had crab crakes (amazing) fish tacos (good and fresh- rice and bean side for this was also good)) swordfish (very nice-kids even enjoyed it!), bouillabaisse (excellent and huge!). Left feeling comfortably full but not stinky (from fried fish), or that my arteries were clogged. Service was top notch too. My only complaint was the hour wait. There are tables outside with a less than stellar musician but the sun is hot and it gets a bit crowded. We will be back next time we are in the area.

First time to the OBX, walked in after a long day of travel and the bar was full... Happy to wait, while trying to order a drink at bar the manager noticed I wasn't having any luck and came to my rescue! The wait was not long for a table of 2, I ordered the tile fish salad special and it was fresh and delicious. The services was great, this is a must go to spot!

  • T M.

For some reason it seems like 98% of the seafood we encountered in the OBX was deep-fried. Sad, but true. Not here - they know how to cook seafood and at a reasonable price! Yay! This place is bustling so get here early, or go for lunch. We went twice and had to come back due to the dinner crowd.

I went to The Blue moon last night on St. Paddy's day on the recommendation of some locals I had met at Trio. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and it was wonderful. The bartender, Anna, was a breath of fresh air and her service was the best I have had since I got here last Wednesday. I look forward to going back!

Very good atmosphere. Kid friendly during the day. Great beer selection. We had the mahi tacos. They were spot on. The rice and beans that came with them were very tasty. They had a little spice on them, but nothing you can't handle.

My honey and I went here due to the outstanding Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. Almost everything in this super casual locale is homemade (even the ranch dressing!) and the service was excellent. We started off with the Jerk Barbecue Chicken Wings--spicy, sweet and finger lickin' good. For my meal, I ordered the fish and chips, which featured fried fish so light and crispy it almost floated on top of well seasoned fries and a side of a jalepeno remoulade tartar sauce. The portion was so huge I could barely eat half. Andrew got the philly cheese steak with homemade "cheese whiz" and practically inhaled it. Definitely the best meal we had during our OBX vacation!

The four of us were looking for a Mon night dinner that offered something "different" so, after checking Yelp, we decided on Blue Moon. We were not disappointed. Shrimp grits, fried flounder with fries, "southern" angel hair pasta and a Caesar's salad did not disappoint! Service was efficient and friendly, and the restaurant manager (owner?) came around to make sure all was right. All tables and the bar were full on a Monday night, which says a lot about the food and ambiance. Highly recommended!

What a find! This is my first visit to the Blue Moon even though I have been coming out to the OBX for ten years, I hate that we haven't discovered it until this visit, but glad we have it now. We walked in with a party of seven around 5:45 on a Monday and were told about a 35 minute wait, we were sat within 15. We started with a basket of fries and crispy empanadas, both very good. Side Caesars next, very nice presentation and the grilled lemon was a great touch. We went here specifically for the vegetarian pasta dish as three in our party don't eat meat. The all loved it. I was planning on having the "Truckstop" when I walked in but after trying the crispy empanadas appetizer and specifically the green salsa they served with it, I had to have more. I had the pulled pork sandwhich with rice and black beans plus a side of the green salsa. It was great! The pork was moist and tasty. Service was top notch, Kimberly did a great job. In fact, when we were seated they asked us to be a little patient because they just sat her with a party of 11. You would have never known it. Kimberley was pleasant and very knowledgeable, she in no way seemed rushed nor rushed us, taking plenty of time to answer menu questions etc. Now the only down side. I ordered a piece of Coconut custard pie to go. It was a nice size piece but really somewhat lacking in flavor. Creamy and moist but not a lot of coconut flavor. All in all, do not let the appearance of this place throw you off, it is a must stop when visiting the Outer Banks, we'll go back again before we leave.

Loved the atmosphere - local artwork for sale in the bar area, open grill, lively crowd. Cheddar, smoked ham grits were ah-mazing, Jamaica jerked wings were delicious and we tried grilled sheepshead fish for the first time. White, flaky and not fishy at all. Will definitely be back.

  • Andrea H.

We almost didn't go because we were late heading out and hours say close at 9. It's 10:32 now and they still have tables. The actual space is small so plan to wait. They had some live music outside for those waiting. We had the shrimp/fried green tomato and oyster Rockefeller apps. Both were good but maybe just a little too cheesy. Main entrees were fish tacos, chicken sandwich, wahoo special and mahi blt. Everything was delicious! Rice and beans very flavorful.

  • Lisa M.

We were here on the last night of our Outer Banks vacation. Glad we didn't miss it! Great food! 2 of my boys and my husband got fish and chips and my son and I got the fish tacos. Loved it all!! The waitress was very friendly and talked to us a lot about the area. We were seated immediately because we arrived early to avoid the dinner rush. Prices were high but no worse than any other restaurant we ate at during our vacation. I will be back!!! Oh and I loved the artwork displayed on the walls for sale!!

  • M R.

This place is a gem, cool atmosphere and delicious food. I've been here twice, unfortunately, the first time was a much nicer experience then the second, but I believe it was because we had a large party on a Friday night. The hostess did a bad job with seating us within the provided time estimate, and also a poor job seating us at an appropriate table for our party size. That being said, the food was excellent and service was very good. I will be back to get the Blue moon experience I expected, but it will not be there with such a large party. I would highly recommend Blue Moon for couples or small parties. I would NOT recommend this place for large parties (more than 6). Blue moon offers a more elegant dinning experience that's great for a date night with the wife. I will be keeping it to that on the next visit to OBX.

  • Ed S.

My wife and I found this place on Yelp! Turns out to be outstanding, scallops on seaweed salad with sirraci sauce, fried green tomatoes with goat cheese and shrimp in a light tomato sauce, fabulous with great wine selection, Tempranillo by the glass, lots of good beers too, price is good.

    (5)
  • Kenny K.

Finally, a place in the Outer Banks that isn't selling Bud Light and French Fries. For serious, Blue Moon is hoarding all of the good food and craft beers in the Outer Banks. Don't let the unoriginal name and strip mall location get you down. My heart sank as we drove up and first saw it. "I CANT EAT ANOTHER GODDANGED HAMBURGER!" I said to myself. I walked inside. My people. My beers. It was just like home. An hour and a half wait? Beer me sonny, I've got time to kill. Had the fish tacos, pretty good. Had the buffalo shrimp, really good. Avoided the crappy hamburgers, chicken wraps and boardwalk fare that has clogged the culinary heart of OBX. 5/5 relative to everyone else in the Outer Banks. Would be 4/5 in a region that has an abundance of decent food.

Update - Back for the annual OBX pilgrimage and this little gem never fails. New tastes: Fish Tacos - a cornucopia of tasty delights, superb Shrimp not a burger - a delightful combination of shrimp spices and accoutrement. The ciabatta and fried green tomato, Yes. Love the Blue Moon, LOVE

We got here just after they opened (luckily) and were seated right away. The place was full in no time though and people were now waiting at an outside seating area. Our waiter was awesome and we were seated near the food pick up so I got to see every order that came out...everything looked great! After reading many a review, I knew exactly what I was ordering before we got here and I was not disappointed, the scallops were amazing. In fact, everyone in our party loved their food. I would come back everyday of vacay!

The fish tacos are worth the drive to get here. Simply amazing! Get here early! As with any great beach restaurant, it fills quickly! Local friends highly recommended eating here. Very happy they did!

  • Norman H.

Went here on a recommendation of my sister, who has a beach house down in Nags Head. We got there later than normal, 7:15, so we had to wait, but boy was it worth it! Our waitress, Elizabeth, was awesome and knew the menu, made sure our food got to us quickly (and the kitchen had it ready fast, too), and made me tired just watching her work! She busts around there with an economy of motion but efficiency of purpose. I heard from quite a few locals this weekend that it was a great place, and they were not kidding! My wife and I share the appetizer special, Mussels Frommage Bleu (steamed mussels with bleu cheese crumbles and back, wilted greens, and a white wine sauce that was simply killer). Mussels were perfect, not over-cooked. Sauce was so good we sopped it up with bread, and spooned it out, too. Fish tacos were great, as was platter of fried shrimp I got (barely breaded and cooked to perfection, not rubbery at all). Sauteed veggie and cole slaw were likewise excellent. The staff is in it's entirely outstanding. Friendly, yet professional. You get the impression they really care if you enjoy your meal experience. Can't find a single bad thing about our visit.

    (5)
  • Cathy S.

Two things you need to order here: fried calamari (not the chain restaurant frozen kind) and bouillabaisse. Won't recommend their shrimp and grits if you are not the kind of guy that likes tomato gravy over grits.

    (4)
  • Larry E.

Good place! Steak and cheese sub with their own version of cheese whiz was excellent as was the soft shell crab BLT all served with hot seasoned fries that were fresh cut. The service is excellent, the portions large enough to share but above all fresh and tasty food served hot. The only negative was weak sweet tea. I will go back to try some of the other delicious looking dishes as all we heard from the tables around us were varying levels of 'yummy' when they tried their food. Busy place at lunch but the staff is not only pleasant and efficient, they are all about the food being good.

Review of Blue Moon Restaurant This hidden gem is a must if you are looking for seriously good food and drinks while visiting or living in the Outer Banks. Amazing fish, shrimp and grits, selection of beer and wine, and presentation of food. With casual ease Blue Moon outdoes most high end big city fares I've visited. The best part is the atmosphere is casual and approachable at amazing prices. I started with an Outer Banks Kolsh (Endless River) and the wife ordered a glass of Zinfandel. Both were delicious and shortly our Oysters Rockafella arrived as some Bob Marly was playing. This appetizer was really well presented and the bacon was seriously thick on the oysters. Our dinners were a local fish special and I ordered shrimp and grits. My wife didn't leave a grain of rice on the plate as the coconut breaded fish and the green curry sauce were uncontrollably delicious. You know a sauce is good when you want more after the first bite. I've been hearing about shrimp n grits for a while and I'm so glad I tried it here. There was an amazing red creamy sauce mixed with peppers, bacon, and the fattest and possibly the best shrimp I've ever ordered. Each bite was so full of texture and flavor I had to pause and take it in. I finished it off while listening to Buena Vista Social Club and sipping a featured Malbec ($4) glass which was superb . Our server was great. Attentive but not suffocating. She even warned us a ten-top (table of ten) was about to put their order in when we sat down so we wouldn't have to wait too long. We ordered quick and I figured the food would come out too fast but the kitchen and their unique expediter system (which I intend to mention to a few chefs I know) spaced the app and the dinner famously. They even noticed my wife had to step out and feed the boy and gave us ample time to eat our Oysters and have a break before the entrees. The atmosphere is a simple mashup of sports bar, cabana, and subtle sheek. There are some great paintings from local artists on the walls and in the bathrooms. Like any place who knows their food is good, the manager checked in with us after the second bite. our server checked in too. Since we had munched on some crispy delicious fries with the boy we decided to skip dessert. We joked with the server about considered ordering another entree but we had eaten enough and didn't want to be complete gavones. I'm so glad Bobbi at The Pelican Cottages made this recommendation. Unlike the goofy named huge signed and gimmicky barn house restaurants lining the beach and main drag Blue Moon is quietly settled in the corner of a strip mall. Normally a strip mall location activates my foodie franchise awareness system, but don't let it detour you, they put their money Into the experience and not the advertisements. This is a must if you are within 50 miles of here.

Fish tacos excellent. Wife says the de cluck sandwich was awesome. Clean, short wait, but a wait nonetheless in the middle of winter, so it has a good rep with the locals.

Was a bit skeptical from the outside it looks meager and dingy but inside it has a great atmosphere. Immediately greeted by a very friendly hostess with a big smile. She said there would be a forty minute wait but there are two chairs at the bar so we quickly grabbed those. The service at the bar was fantastic. Although we didn't catch their names the dou behind the bar were stellar. ( a curly haired brunette and a guy with glasses). They gave super prompt service gave great recommendations and put up with my silly requests as I was sick and couldn't eat certain things.great beer list but I felt that there wine list could have been a bit more adventurous. Now onto the food... the grits AMAZING. Delicious fish tacos rich in flavor. And the truck stop was SO filling. The potatoes come in a delicious cream sauce. The pork was oh so tender. It was a little saltly though :( still it was every fat kids dreams meal. Can't wait to come back

Excellent place to eat. We went on a Monday night, and needless to say, it was packed. But they had live music, so the hour wait didn't seem so long. The food was tremendous. I had fried mahi mahi (fish and chips), and it was amazing. My wife and parents had the mahi mahi BLT, and they raved about it. The atmosphere was very good, despite the odd location (strip mall). Will return again.

Kind of a small place in a strip shopping center without much of view, but I came here to eat!! My wife said the shrimp and grits were amazing! My daughter had the truck driver plate, which worries me on some level, and loved it. The chicken tenders were delicious said the finicky 5 year old. My jerk BBQ was pretty good too. My first thought was fish, but then I thought "I've never even heard of Jerk BBQ, I'm gonna get me some!" I don't really talk like that, but if the mood fits... At any rate, the place is kind of small or the crowd that eats there is sort of big because we had to wait about 15 minutes and we were early in the dinner rush (or so we thought). Great service, great food, and reasonable prices! What more could you ask for while on vacation in OBX.

Great food, very friendly, helpful staff! We really enjoyed everything we ordered. We loved that they have an open kitchen so you can see what's going on (not that a "closed" kitchen would have stopped us from dining here). The only negative about the place is that it's VERY small, crowded and loud and expect to wait, they are always busy. But that can easily be over looked since the food and service was so good!

This is our first trip to OBX. We found this place using Yelp. We had the Shrimp and Grits which we never had before either. It was great. The service was exceptional. Once in awhile you just get lucky. We got lucky finding this place to eat.

Great prices for this casual dining location in Nags Head with fantastic service and food as well! 8 adults and 2 kids ventured into this location around 530 on a Monday night and were seated immediately. The service was spot on and food came at just the right place. There wasn't a single soul at the table who was disappointed with their meal which is quite fantastic! I split the calamari with a friend. This dish was very well seasoned and lightly fried and in a delicious cherry pepper lemon sauce. YUM! I had the mahi mahi BLT for dinner with a side of steamed veggies instead of fries. Both delicious and with a generous heap of bacon! I finished it off by sharing the chocolate pecan pie with two others and and it was warm and gooey! All in all a great experience and we'll go back the next time we're visiting!

The pulled pork was life changing. All four of the people in my party loved their meals. Even the side Caesar salads were exceptional. We will absolutely be returning here next time we are in the OBX. Highly recommended.

THE BEST SOUP and SCALLOPS I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! Great food selection, nice wait staff, friendly casual atmosphere. A must try if you are in the OBX area!

Great restaurant in an unassuming shopping center. We had no problem getting a table at 5:30, but the good is so good there was already a wait at 6pm. I had the fish tacos. They were fantastic. Everything I saw served looked wonderful!

The food here was alright in my book. A lot of my group got the buffalo shrimp and loved them. Others had the Mahi-Mahi sandwich and were fans of those. I personally had the Hawaiian burger and it was alright. A little drippy with soy sauce, but the taste was something I enjoyed. The portions were pretty big and I left feeling full. The artwork around the room is pretty fun to look at (and is for sale). Waiter was attentive and friendly. He had told us that they were sold out of a beer we were looking to try (it happened to have the name of my husband's grandmother who had passed away that day in the name, so he wanted some). Manager or owner - not sure - came over and asked how our visit had went and when we told him we were a little sad the beer wasn't in stock he was surprised. Walked right into the freezer, grabbed a six pack, and gave it to us for free when we left. Super classy and made my husband's day! We had to wait (over an hour) for our large group, though I"m not sure why.. the tables outside were completely empty.. though the wait was worth it. Just drink it away!

This place is very inconspicuously located. It doesn't show up on GPS and both times we've attempted to go we've gotten lost trying to find it, but the staff was very helpful in their directions when we called. It's in a shopping center called Surfside Plaza at the very very back. Once you get past that, it's all uphill from there. The vibe is beach casual, pretty standard for the area, but a lively atmosphere and an interesting and well done menu. Despite the 12 spot in front of our table, the kitchen was able to get our food out in a timely manner. They offer broiled mahi mahi on the kids menu, which is very cool, and have great house made fries. We started off with the calamari in a lemon broth that had a consistency and flavor that resembled kraft italian dressing. So that was a little off putting but the overall flavors and texture was great. My crabcake entree was delicious, esp the remouloude it was served with. And of course here you have to get blue moons. My husband actually had the blue moon margarita and that was awesome, had an effervescence to it. Service was on point, esp during the crazy dinner rush, our waitress was able to get out some crackers to my fussy toddler and get her meal in quickly before everyone else's. Overall, a great lunch/dinner option for the casual crowd with pretty amazing food and friendly service.

Excellent food with a very unusual combos. The chefs must stay up nights doing their recipes as they were really unexpected, but awesome. Best casual, place in obx

Reviews are complaining about the wait - go to the bar, grab a drink and wait. The food is worth it every time. This is the most amazing food at the beach. The shrimp Napoleon with fried green tomatoes, the truck stop, the shrimp and grits. All have amazing tastes. I would wait - and have - for an hour and half for a table here. Love this place.

This place is tucked away in a strip mall and from the outside looks pretty plain. When you walk inside its night and day. We went for a late lunch and sat at the bar instead of waiting. All of the staff was nice and smiling. Our drinks came quickly followed by our food. Beers ontap suprised me as they had about 5 really impresive including victory dirty dog ipa and belles coffee stout. For lunch i ordsr the shrimp sandwhich and my wife had the crab bisque and thai chili scallops. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. We will put this place into our OBX rotation.

Love this place! Get there early or be prepared to wait. Excellent food. More upscale than one would expect from a "beach grill". Good service. It's always our first stop at the Outer Banks.

NO WI-FI ANYMORE. Food is ok, decent beer selection. Advertised as free wi-fi but "we don't give it out to customers anymore". I used to come here a few times a week as a good spot to do a little work and have a couple beers while on vacation, will be looking for a new place. Don't know if it's an anti-tourist thing or just anti-customer, and I don't care. It's a shame because otherwise I enjoyed the atmosphere.

After reading a good Yelp review (or several), we tried to hit here Saturday night but the wait was over an hour. Came back Monday night and still had to wait (only about 15 min) but it was worth it. The food and service were great. I had a mahi mahi sandwich and a strawberry margarita. My husband had the fish and chips (also made with mahi mahi). When he asked if they had regular tartar sauce instead of the advertised jalapeño remoulade sauce, the happily brought him both. Other things on the menu looked good too and since we were sitting near the open kitchen we saw several things come out that we were sorry we didn't order. We will definitely come back next time we are here.

Delicious! Oyster Rockefeller appetizer was better than anything I had in New Orleans...I was surprised to find it in a run down strip mall in the outer banks. My shrimp and grits was amazing. My husband loved the bbq sandwich. Crab cake sandwich was adored by one of our friends. We also had key lime pie and the bourbon pecan pie, both delicious. Also, the drinks here were the best I've had in the OBX. Our party had painkillers and white russians, and both were of lux quality and mix.

A nice Casual dining restaurant with great atmosphere, nice bar with so many fun beer choices and open kitchen. The menu choices had me wanting to try so many different dishes! The food was delicious, 5 star, at reasonable prices. The entrees are amazing with a gourmet presentation! The scallops on a bed of very tasty seaweed, perfect! Kudos to chef! The burgers were amazing, cooked perfectly, a great blend of ground beef to make a juicy tasty quality burger! The teens also enjoyed their dishes! I also bought a very cool Blue Moon logo shirt too. I'll post pictures on their Facebook page when I wear it at a cool location! This is one of my new favorite places, and look forward to returning again!

I talked my whole family into coming here because of the reviews, including my hesitant father who has been visiting the OBX for 30+ years, and we were all glad I did. My hubs and I split the steak sandwich with amazing homemade Wiz (nothing like Wiz and I'm a Philly suburb girl who is not a fan of bottled cheese) and the fish tacos. The sandwich was better than most with fresh chipped beef and the blackened fish tacos were equally fabulous, though I was not impressed with the rice and beans. The fries were boardwalk-type and crunchy - we enjoyed them. Got the calamari to share, and it was average (guessing you'd have to really like the lemony wine sauce it comes in). Mom got the buffalo shrimp as did we as an app and they were breaded and fried perfectly, a good size, and served with a homemade blue cheese sauce that was just as good. Dad was impressed with their tile fish special and my sister got the pulled pork and loved it (minus the cilantro sauce- she is a generally picky eater). Service was excellent. Get there early during lunch or dinner hours, because they fill up fast, despite being quick. Will be back again!

I had the Mahi Mahi fish and chips and it was amazing. Went great with the local beer my server suggested. This is the place to stop if you want to have a casual dinner in the Nags Head area.

This will be short as my fingers are still thawing from today's chilly weather. 1) Beer - good. Wine - out of Tempranillo, but spouse enjoyed her chardonnay 2) Fried green tomatoes and shrimp napolean - $12 - delicious 3) Basket of fries - $4 - excellent 4) Beach burger - $10 - both kids ate all 5) Shrimp and grits - $19 - delectable - should have gone with the wine for this entree.... 6) beer battered Mahi Mahi and chips (fries) - $14- not bad. 7) kid's spaghetti - $5 - okay. a little watery/drippy Waitress was friendly and we enjoyed excellent service. There's some nice local art hanging on the wall. Bathrooms were clean and fully functioning/stocked - men's urinal has the front page of the local paper. It's a very casual atmosphere with a few prices that can sneak up on you if you're not prepared - the shrimp and grits was an excellent recommendation from other Yelpers, but this place doesn't look like it would serve a $19 entree. It was well worth it, though - I'm already salivating thinking about when I go back!!!

My friend and I are dinner here while we were in town for the OBX Marathon. We loved this place! It was completely full when we walked in and people were waiting, which was a good sign. The hostess quoted a one hour wait, but we probably waited only about 30-40 minutes. After being seated we shared the scallop app- amazing. The scallops were perfectly cooked, seared on the outside and soft on the inside. They were served on top of a seaweed salad. Then, we both ordered the shrimp and grits which was great too. It had bacon, roasted red peppers, sautéed onions, and Gouda cheese. It was definitely the cheesiest shrimp and grits I've had, but it was really good and made it taste even more savory. The service was great too. I definitely recommend Blue Moon Beach Grill!

  • Shannon S.

Appears to be a very popular place however the head hostess informed us it would be an hour+ 45 minute wait when we arrived. They had a nice outdoor area with music, so we waited outside for an hour and when we checked back we were told "I told you it was going to be 1 hour 45 minutes and it's only been an hour." A very brusque and unfriendly attitude. We have been coming down here 30 years and chose to spend our last night at the beach at their restaurant. Very disappointing. We will never go back.

We wanted to try something new for our last night in the OBX.... I looked to yelp and it did not disappoint! You pull up to the parking lot of the Harley Davidson store and you question if this place is going to be good or not just walk inside!...Such a cool laid back atmosphere! Get there early so you can get a table and get one of their specials which are awesome!! Once they are gone that's it for the night!! All 6 of us loved our dinners. I had the Shrimp and grits and they were very good, lots of onions and red peppers, yum. My husband had the cheese steak with wiz... OMG amazing!!!! But let me tell you, the salmon and cuscus (Sp?) special was so flavorful and every bite was different and delicious. My mom had the salad (had a grilled red onion on top... amazing) with fried oysters. I don't even like oysters and these were SO good.. they were huge!!! Really a must try.

We ate here at the beginning of our OBX vacation, suggested to us by a friend that has a cottage nearby. Excellent service, fresh food, nice selection of beverages (we had beer- plenty to choose from!). We tried the calamari for an appetizer and it was so different than the norm- and so delicious. Our meals were huge, the fries are homemade and the atmosphere pleasant. We will be back for sure!

  • Nick J.

The food here is seriously great. The calamari app was by far the best I've ever had, tender and a tangy sauce that is like nothing I've ever had. The fried oyster platter was incredible and the portion of oysters was beyond acceptable. My wife had the fried green tomatoes with shrimp and goat cheese and would not share it. The place was packed, we got there at 6 and there was already on hour + wait on a Wednesday. Another tell was the place was loaded with locals, not just tourists. Bartenders were friendly, knowledgeable and made great drinks. Draught beer selection was good as well.

This place is as awesome as people say. We had the fish and chips, crab cake dinner and buffalo shrimp. Every item on our plates was truly excellent. Hand cut fries, delicious coleslaw, perfectly cooked fish. The crab cake dinner came with two huge cakes. We couldn't spot any filler at all! Though the restaurant was busy, the staff was in no rush at all. Very attentive. Looking forward to another visit soon!

Went in for just a drink at the bar... Very nice atmosphere. Got temperanillo (wine $6.25)and the house special beer (can't remember name) ...very large selection of beer. Menu looked great and they had lots of specials to offer. Will def go back for dinner.

Where are all the good reviews coming from? This place is pedestrian at best. Food is under spiced, service is slow. My daughter's spaghetti was really the only tasty thing on our table and when we relayed the message to our waitress she stated "it probably tastes so good because you're really hungry." What that tells me is that even the servers don't believe in the food. My big complaint however is the kitchen. Two cooks in the kitchen with no hats to cover their hair and there is a cook with a big bushy beard whom I saw scratch his facial hair right over the grill (twice) and just kept on cooking. No hand washing, nothing. Gross! If you're going to have an open kitchen then you need to practice better sanirary regimen.

What a find! We ordered some of the specials and could not have been happier! The mussels with blue cheese and bacon made me want to walk into the kitchen and kiss the chef. They were out of the crab stuffed flounder, so they substituted with something called a puppy drum and it was delicious! Our waitress was wonderful with my picky eating 5 year old and her plain noodles and didn't give us any crazy looks when our kid then dumped a ton of salt on them. We got the key lime pie and flour less chocolate cake and both were amazing! Couldn't be happier!

I really wanted to give this new find on the Outer Banks five stars but my wife would have my rear. I love this little spot tucked inside Surf Side Plaza (a small strip mall from days gone by which sits half empty now) a block or two from Jockey's Ridge. They have been around for a little over three years but I just found time to stop by. We arrived around 6:00 and had a 30 minute wait; not terrible since the weather was nice and there are picnic tables outside along with a few shops nearby to kill the time. Once inside I really dug the vibe. You could tell that some thought went into the design, maximizing as much space without cramping too many tables inside. The restaurant probably seats 40-50 at tables with another 10 at the bar. Our waiter noted that the owner wants to keep it small but able to accommodate as well, a definite challenge awaits them as the word continues to spread. We started with the soup of the day, a crab bisque. Pretty much a She Crab Soup, this is the soup I've been looking on the Outer Banks since Midgette's Seafood closed down years ago. The perfect combination of crab with herbs and spices and just a dash of sherry - perfection. We decided to go with some sandwiches after several nights out overeating on glutenous seafood platters and weren't disappointed. We had the Caribbean pork sandwich which was great - braised in rum with jerk spices...a great, flavorful sandwich topped with cilantro cream (could have used more of this.) The rice and beans side were amazing...some of the best I've ever had. Not the bland rice and beans you're thinking, a super flavorful mix of rice and beans with loads of seasoning. Fight the thought to substitute fries and go with the rice & beans, you won't be disappointed! We had a chicken sandwich with pineapple and barbecue sauce which she said was great. She did sub the fries which were handcut and cooked perfectly. Lastly, we sampled the fish tacos which, while tasty, were a bit different. There was lettuce instead of cabbage or slaw and no hot sauce, also the cilantro cream was barely existent. Not that these were bad, but we probably won't get them again. The cabbage/slaw is such a key to fish tacos it made the taste drastically different. The service was also pretty slow, not on the part of the waiter, but the kitchen. My soup was served quickly, but then took at least 20 minutes to get our entrees afterward. Once we saw the food put up it was still a couple minutes before it was delivered, making a few parts of the food cooler than we would have liked. Either way, all in all a great new find with a mix between sandwiches, appetizers, fresh seafood entrees, and great daily specials. I look forward to visiting again and sampling more of the appetizing menu. Open lunch and dinner everyday except Monday.

We were a party of 4 who visited on a busy Friday night in October. Despite being packed, service was fast, friendly and efficient. Outstanding appetizers included the scallops, mushroom soup and shrimp on fried green tomatoes. We all loved our main courses of trout, cobia and the shrimp with grits. You cannot go wrong here.

I have only one complaint about the Blue Moon -- they don't take reservations, and they are popular and crowded. We got there at 7:30 on a weekday and still had a 45 minute wait ... so they said. It ended up being 20 minutes, and there is a pleasant place to wait outside, so no big problem. The five stars are for the selection of seafood (beside the usual, they had corvina, sheepshead, and drum -- I love variety!). All were very well prepared. Only the crab cakes were a bit off -- too much filling. Take a look at the draft beers -- interesting selecting. One more plus -- prices were not cheap but they were reasonable. I like it. I like it.

This is in my top three restaurants in Nags Head. It's locally owned (I've met the owners on more than one occasion), has a great ambiance, and the food is superb. I love Southern dishes, and this has the best shrimp and grits I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. The biggest downside is the wait, but I promise you it's worth it. Grab a beer, sit on the porch and relax; you're at the beach!

Eight stars!! Great fried green tomatoes, shrimp & grits, good selection of local beers by the bottle. Good service. Good ambiance, but also TVs over the bar if you need to sneak a look at the playoff games.

A solid choice for a good meal on the outer banks. I disagree with those that call this "the best" on the Outer Banks, but BM certainly beats by a mile the vast majority of cheesy fried fish restaurants you find everywhere. We had a nice meal at the bar on Sunday night. Good calamari with a great sauce- but ask for it on the side, it's bizarre that they drench food that it supposed to be crispy in a soup of sauce so it gets soggy- much, much better to have it on the side. I also appreciated the great bar selection and beers on tap.

Have yet to find a decent restaurant in OBX but this place is it. The thing that really blew me away was the guy that checked all the orders and cleaned the plates before they were sent out. Excellent customer service, food and quality.

Great food and accommodating staff for a large group. Only suggestion is large groups need to get there early as the seating area is limited. Recommend fish and chips dinner(beer battered Mahi Mahi) as it was great!

Large servings. Mostly fried food, sparse vegetarian choices. Bar was good, rum runners was good and great beers on top. They use fresh herbs that's plucked from the pots as needed. Long wait for large groups. But a very responsive staff and management. Nice art work on display for sale as well.

Great restaurant. Good atmosphere. Friendly wait staff. I had the mahi BLT. It was very good, although the bottom bun became soggy quickly from the fish. The fries that came with it were good. Would definitely return here to try some of the other dishes!

  • Dirk C.

Large, lovely dining room with great service and great food. Large selection of beers (including its namesake). The place was humming at noon and we were told the wait would be half an hour, but we had a table in ten minutes. I had a "shrimp not-a-burger"; grilled shrimp and fried green tomatoes with aioli and arugula. It was amazing. My wife ordered PEI mussels in a white wine sauce and declared it the best meal she had ever eaten. (The food has been so good on this trip to the OBX that she has taken to hyperbole.) Blue Moon is located in a strip center at the south end of Nags Head that reaches from the beach road to the bypass (Croatan Highway) and is easily accessed from either.

  • Holly P.

This place is a hidden gem. A diamond in the rough. Literally, a gourmet restaurant in a strip mall! If you are willing to spend just a little more money than you typically would for an OBX dinner, you can get a meal that is 3x as good. I had the shrimp and grits and it was to die for.

    (5)
  • William D.

My first trip to the Blue Moon, I was happy to see that most of the reviews were accurate. The food was great. We had a party of 8, with 2 rather picky eaters. Evrryone found something to eat and complimented how good it was.

This is not your typical OBX "touristy" burger and beach fries restaurant. Blue Moon is a restaurant that definitely cares about the quality and consistency of the food they serve. The entire staff works as a cohesive unit which makes the dining experience so enjoyable. Now about the food, the husband and I have eaten here 3 times now and a 4th visit is being planned. All 3 times have been amazing! Heather, our waitress was super nice and even remembered our drink orders the second time we came in. What we have ordered... Jerk chicken wings yum! Fish and chips yum! Shrimp & grits beyond yum! Fried calamari yum yum delish! Bouillabaisse beyond yum! Cheese steak w/ whiz holy crap yum yum! Caesar salad w/ blackened shrimp fricken awesomely yum yum! Even the basic house salad was better than most I've had elsewhere. Coconut custard pie. Italian lemon cake and the fantabulous Key Lime pie were all amazing.

  • Lindsay H.

The food here was fresh and delicious! Had a lot of variety on the menu. I was with a large party and not one complaint from the group. Service was pretty good. We went for lunch on a weekday in sept and had half hour wait for a group of nine. Not tons of seating, and it seems like they are busy all the time.

Fifth year we've eaten here and it never disappoints! Small out of the way location but a couple of years ago it expanded and there's more room now. Still, you're gonna have to wait because I think more and more people are finding out about this gem! The owners are very friendly and have done a great job with this venture (they were in Staunton, Va before). Always a crowd and the live music outside makes the time go by faster while you wait with your adult beverage. I always get the Angel's Delight because it is amazing! Lots of fresh seafood. There are plenty of other good things there as you can tell by the pics. It's definitely a "must" for us every time we come to the Outer Banks!

We came here for lunch while waiting for our vacation house to open. Despite being well after noon (2pm) the place was packed and we had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. We went to the bar and had to wait quite a while for drinks because the bar tender preffered serving customers who arrived after us. The beers were good and once we had our table the service was great! Food was excellent. The shrimp not a burger was fantastic, as was the BBQ pulled pork.

Wow! This is a hidden Gem in an unsuspecting location, a strip mall plaza. I was suprised to be seated right away but soon after this place got packed. Excellent wine and beer selection. And Shrimp and Grits, Shrimp and Grits, Shrimp and Grits.... Holy crap are the Shrimp and Grits awesome. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer which was oh my god good. Service was genuinely friendly and on point. Definintely stop here if you are not sure where to go in the outer banks yet. I will be back next year....Please keep up the excellent work!

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness!!! We love this place! Food and service were awesome! We had 6 adults and 7 kiddos...not a ton of "elbow" room but they accommodated us very well and the best they could. We got there at 5:15 and had to wait 45 min for a table large enough but it was worth it! I'm not a huge grit type of girl but since the shrimp and grit dish was so highly recommended, I ordered it...I"m so happy I did! This was the best dish ever! Beer selection was great, service was outstanding and food was awesome! We have been to Avon and Corolla before and this has been our favorite restaurant in the OBX!

I choose this restaurant because of the reviews, I should have ordered the stuff they ordered. It's ok. If you're a foodie understand these reviews are left by people who aren't. The chef obviously thinks he's on top chef, the sauces are overly sweet, food unnecessarily complicated and the 'special' drinks were terrible. Whatever you do don't order the lemongrass martini unless you think Lemon Pledge would taste awesome with vodka. I had a low quality tuna steak I guess B grade (I have owned a restaurant and have experience buying tuna) with a sickly sweet sauce and barely edible sides. My husband liked his tilefish special, I thought it was better than mine but nothing great. The oysters Rockefeller were horrid, covered, no smothered in buckets of bacon and cheese, it was almost impossible to taste the oyster. We had the pork belly special and again, just barely registered as mediocre. The Caesar salad was downright icky. I presume the fish taco and mahi BLT rock as reviews profess but the rest is certainly not a treat if you like to eat out at extraordinary restaurants. It's probably great for a sandwich and beer. That being said, the service was stellar and they were packed. The manager and waitress both checked up on us frequently. I just think the food is overly worked and not the result of any real culinary training. More like a line cook who tried a couple things out, some work, some don't. Definitely check it out, get the fish tacos don't expect fine dining. Cool people, cool atmosphere not bad, probably better for lunch.

We stopped here for lunch and were very pleased. I'm not usually a fan of strip mall restaurants but this place is great. We had fish tacos and the special tuna tostada and they were both tasty. I even liked the rice and beans, not usually a fan of Spanish style rice but this was tender and spiced really well. If you're in Nags Head swing by for lunch.

Great service. Food really good and reasonably priced. Half way through vacation, I was really craving something that wasn't fried or seafood and came here for lunch. The spinach salad was awesome. I ended up succumbing to the temptation of the buffalo shrimp (fried and seafood) and it was worth it - delicious! Lots of kids were there and they seemed happy. Later in the day we saw some friends and recommended it to them. It turns out they went there yesterday for lunch and were also raving about it. Don't usually do repeats on vacation but seriously considering coming back.

We loved it so much we went back twice in one week! The menu has daily specials which were delicious and the atmosphere and service is exceptional. Be prepared to wait. It was the best restaurant in Nags Head and we went in the off season and it was rockin'. The calamari is delicious and the jerk chicken wings have great flavor. My fave was the spinach and arugula salad with champagne soaked pears! Great beers on tap, wait staff really enjoy working there and no matter what you order... it will be delicious. My hubby had the fish and chips and didn't rave about it (served with fries more than chips) but otherwise all dishes we had were great!

Our first day vacationing and decided to go to Blue Moon Beach Grill because of the high rating. We ordered mussels and scallops as appetizers. shrimp and grids and fish tacos as entrees. It was good but everything was covered with sauces and heavy handed with flavoring. Since its an open kitchen you can see that the chefs are young and energetic that's why I think they're trying too hard to impress with creativity. We are by the water and many items are catch of the day, less is good. Having said that the service was good but the wait was long. Blue moon is very lively and is a great place to go with your friends and family.

The Strip Mall worried me as we'll as the sign outside that said, "shockingly good"...however, the lunch was very good. Crab Cakes were all Crab Meat and outstanding. Quick service and overall good experience.

This is one of the highest rated restaurants in OBX and I can see why!!! The Mahi Mahi BLT was really good, the cheese steak was solid and the fish taco's got rave reviews. They have an awesome beer list and the waitresses are all cute and attentive...

Our first stop at the beach this year...and a great stop it is! A bit tough to find, tucked in the back side of a strip mall, it is everything you would want in a beach grill. Start with the service, great! Attentive without being overly so or pushy. The food, everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked really good. We got burgers - all perfectly done, lots of toppings. How much is "lots of toppings"? The bacon burger for example had 5 or 6 strips of bacon. Egg over easy, perfect...runny yolk and done white. Fries are equally impressive, with a board walk fry taste that cries out for malt vinegar (which they have - yeah!). As others have said, beer wise a nice selection of micro brews...if you want Bud (ACK!) this place is not for you. All in all, a really nice beach feel, good food, and fun; what more could you want?

Lots of happy smiling faces and great service. My drink always stayed topped off without me having to ask. I ordered the blackened crab cake dinner and actually was blown away. Amazingly fresh tasting,... Maybe the best crab cakes I've ever eaten. My wife thought the same thing about her steak,... She isn't a fish eater, so she usually has to put up with second rate steaks and chicken, but not this time. I even ate my cole slaw which i hardly ever do because i'm really picky about how different cole slaws turn out. In my opinion the Outer Banks doesn't have a lot of great restaurants even though there are a ton of restaurants down here. This place though is on my top 10 list for this area. Be advised that this little place currently is located in a strip mall but It really didn't bother me. Also note that their food is not cheap but I've never got equal or any better for less money in this area so I guess it's priced about right.

OMG! this place rocks! i have been there twice so far.. the atmosphere is cool, surf, beachy decor (not at all tacky) and there was fabulous local art displayed (and for sale) on one large wall. the service was great... the food awesome. I loved the oysters Rockefeller, the shrimp and grits and the crab soup. this place is busy around dinner time and a wait is to be expected, but on our second trip we rolled in around 4 pm and were seated immediately and found the place fill up as we were finishing up..... this will be a regular stop for me on future trips to the OBX...

Blue Moon is hiding in a small strip mall where the Harley dealer is. We went for lunch and had the Mahi Tacos and Mahi BLT sandwich w fries. This place was very good. The food was Fresh and very delicious. It's not expensive and worth every cent. The interior is casual w a bar. Has nice beach decor and plenty tables. The service was quick and friendly

After a long day of kayaking, we were totally wiped and needed some food to pep us up! Blue Moon was near the hotel and fit the bill. We had an atrociously long wait of 45 minutes on a Saturday at 7:30 pm (but stuck with it knowing that most anywhere else would be just as bad). The decor is nice and kitchsy. I like that they display lots of art for sale by local artists. The service is cordial and the food is good. There is plenty of variety on the menu, which includes a section for kids if I remember right. Definitely a great neighborhood staple - don't let the strip mall setting fool you! 3.5 Stars.

We love this place! We drove all the way from Corolla and waited 45 minutes and it was worth it. The veggie pasta is great and The shrimp not burger is fantastic-never had anything like it before. just as important, the service is fantastic. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and everyone works as a team. Second year we've come to the outer banks, and second year we've come to blue moon. Blue moon is definitely a must for us whenever we are visiting the outer banks.

The pulled pork sandwich was the best I've ever had. They prepared it with a Jerk rub that gave it a unique twist that made it tasty and dryer than usual. I'm not a fan of pork drowned in BBQ sauce and this had the perfect amount with a nice fresh bun. I will definitely be back here when in Nags Head again.

My parents went with my siblings, and loved it so much, they brought me the next day. I had a tuna tostada, and the tuna was cooked rare, and was wonderful. My mother and girlfriend had the scallop appetizer, and they were very happy. I would definitely go back if I was in the area.

When we came here last year, we were impressed, but after visiting a second time, we can safely say that Nags Head has a winner in this restaurant, tucked into an unassuming strip mall near the Nags Head Harley Davidson. Our service was helpful and informative both times, and although I am not a big drinker, the descriptions of the different beers and wines available entices you to try one. The cheesesteaks are as advertised, as good as Philly, and the other food choices are just as good. I had the Shrimp "Not a Burger" with fried green tomatoes, provolone cheese, arugula, ciabatta bread and enough blackened shrimp to have to stuff them back in my sandwich every time they fell out of my overstuffed bread. The small dining room tends to get crowded, so be sure to call ahead or try to eat off peak. We are sure to make this place an annual event when we visit the Outer Banks.

Excellent Food, great staff, wonderful environment. Fine dining quality food in a relaxed ocean side flair. They also support local artists by hanging their artwork showing they are involved with their community and support others. I ordered off the specials menu, mussels and clams in a bleu cheese sauce and bronzed tuna with Mediterranean couscous. My wife ordered calamari with fish tacos. Both meals were fantastic and we left extremely full. Excellent drink menu as well. We will be back and recommend you enjoy this great restaurant.

This is one of the best places to eat in OBX for sure. The jerk chicken wings are some of the best wings I have ever had anywhere. The fries are awesome. I had the Mahi BLT sandwich and it was exceptional. My wife had a pasta dish with shrimp and she loved it. Kids menu is a great one. They have a great bar and tons of craft beer to choose from. We took some desert to go and they were good also. See you next year.

Great food! Fresh, good quality. Fun environment; friendly service. Items to order: 1. Shrimp & grits 2. Cream, crab, corn soup (like a clam chowder). This was best I've ever had!! Really enjoyed this place!

Great!!! Four of us stopped by for lunch and received a cheerful greeting as soon as we walked in the door. Once seated our waitress came by introduced herself. She was also very cheerful and helped us with our selections. She provided excellent service throughout the meal. To start with we ordered jerk chicken wings and buffalo shrimp. Both were excellent. We followed that up with a steak and cheese with home made cheese whiz. The steak is shaved ribeye. We also had the fish and chips, pulled pork sandwich and a 1/3rd pound cheeseburger. All of the meals were outstanding. I wish I was staying in the outer banks for another day so I could return here and try some other items. We'll be back several times during our next vacation. This may be the best meal on the outer banks.

In my humble opinion this is the best restaurant on the Outer Banks. Family owned and operated, and the staff makes you feel like a local. The food is simple and cooked to near perfection. I love it here and always make it back whenever i am on vacation in the OBX. Beer list is great as well. If you haven't tried it, put it on your list.

One of several MUST DO places on the OBX. Never had Shrimp & Grits before - had to learn how to cook them after enjoying them here. Not as good, but a great meal. My seafood palette was shrimp and crab, Eastern Shore style until I started going here. Started to enjoy their yellowfin several ways - got to have it regularly now. Have grown adventuresome with different fish meals since and always trust and enjoy whatever they offer. Like other good restaurants, whatever is on the standard menu is great, but is typically surpassed by the specials. Best to come early or late as they don't take reservations and are always busy. If you show up at 6 in season expect to wait a couple hours. Try a late lunch. Though the menu is different - equally awesome - less of a crowd after two. Gotta say, the service is awesome. First time there was cheerily greeted by the owner/wife, with a huge smile, happy voice, and wonderful service. Haven't received anything but since.

YUM! YUM! YUM! YUM! This place is the best place on the beach! And I'm not lying. Since I'm now a local I can tell you first hand this is the place to eat. The food is so fresh and creative. They always have awesome specials and good beer. They have recently remodeled and are now much larger and can seat a larger crowd. Definitely don't miss your chance to go to the Blue Moon Beach Grill when you are on the Outer Banks.

Have always loved coming here!! The atmosphere is great and the food is fabulous. I never really branched out of the box and always got a burger or another sandwich (all delicious). However last time I went, I got "the truckstop" (pork loin over skillet potatoes and onions covered with a mouthwatering pan gravy).....WOW!!!! Absolutely amazing!!! Staff are so friendly and wonderful!

One of the better restaurants on the Outer Banks. Perfect balance on the menu of choices you don't see at lot of other places yet simple and non pretentious. For example I had a pumpkin and crab bisque that was to die for. These small twists with fresh ingrediants make for an excellent menu. Blackened tuna taco's were super fresh and perfect. Star of the meal though was wifey's "Shrimp Not A Burger". Blackened shrimp sandwich on a cibatta roll with fried green tomato, sharp prov and reduced balsalmic. So good.

Great place to eat. Food is wonderful--especially the shrimp & grits. Best in the OBX. try the calamari & fried green tomato appetizers. According to my 4 year old granddaughter, they make the best pb&j sandwich on the island. Service is fast & friendly.

Great food in a very unexpected place! Only reason I gave four stars instead of five is that one meal came significantly after the rest but was worth the wait. Hidden gem!!

One of my new favorites in OBX. I had the wings, fish and chips and countless high quality beers. Everyone in my large group got something different and there wasn't a bad meal on the table. Come hungry and thirsty, you won't be disappointed.

Superb food, welcoming and efficient staff, down home ambience, and a great selection of craft beers, wine and cocktails. What more can you ask for? My wife ordered the shrimp and grits, which were amazingly good. I ordered the fish and chips which were also terrific -- super homemade fries and slaw, plus perfectly fried fish. Our waitress was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. This is literally the best on the Outer Banks. Which is why the place is packed at 5:30. Get there early or prepare for a wait -- it is so worth it.

went on a tuesday evening in september with my wife. told we had a 30 minutes wait, but after only 10 minutes we were seated. wore a polo shirt and khaki shorts, dress is casual. service was excellent and friendly. had a blue moon on tap. buffalo shrimp were awesome. they come with a chunky blue cheese dip. i had shrimp and grits and they were creamy and wonderful. heavy but a reasonable portion size so I had room for dessert. My wife had the mahi mahi BLT with fries. The fries were great. The fish tasted great. The sandwich was good, but of everything we had was the least good and left my wife with food envy. We topped it off with a slice key lime pie. It had a strong flavor of fresh lime. I am not a big pie person but I enjoyed this. Altogether with the beer, appetizer, 2 entrees and dessert the total came to 52 after tax and before tip. All of the food was excellent, and everyone was so friendly. The price is certainly reasonable given the food and experience. We would definitely go back.

E and I discovered this place from Yelp reviews on our first ever visit to Nags Head, May (2012) -- enjoyed it immensely and made it a "must visit again" on our next visit to OBX. Fast forward to one year later, May 2013, dined there last night with friends we met at the bar on that first visit. Blue Moon nails it again. Delightful menu choices and the food, so tasty! Drinks and nice range of craft beers to work with while you wait for a table. The staff (including the in-view kitchen) thoughtful, fun and in rhythm. The room, relaxed and abuzz with satisfied customers. Blue Moon Beach Grill Crew, good show!

Dinner for four pre-season weekday night- not a long wait, and the host was attentive to seating us very promptly. The food was sometimes really great - for example the special crab soup and the calamari appetizer, and sometimes so-so - the special fish salad was great as far as the salad ingredients, but the fish itself was overcooked to the point of being almost too dry to eat. Not very many choices for vegetarians - almost all the salads have bacon in them (which they will leave out but then they don't offer any substitutes). The wait staff was very professional and friendly - perhaps a bit too much so - calling everyone "honey" which could just be a southern custom. She also brought one person a beer sample so he could decide if it was to his taste which was greatly appreciated. Biggest disappointment - the lemon drop martinis were average at best. Not too tasty and not even served in a martini glass.

It was our first time in Nag's Head. We were a group of 13 on a Sat night (adults and teens with a broad range of preferences and pickiness). We read the reviews and decided to try it. They don't take reservations, so it was going to be tough to find a table without a long wait anywhere. The restaurant is in a strip mall, and the dinning room isn't large. The manager was friendly, took our name and said it would be at least an hour. Within 45 min we were seated - and I have to say, it was well worth the wait. The food was outstanding. Everyone one in our group raved about the food, from the burgers, salads to the shrimp and crab pasta dish. The fried green tomato dish was out of the world... (blackened shrimp over fried green tomatoes and mild goat cheese... Amazing favors). Our server was outstanding, she had her hands full but was friendly, attentive and stayed on top of two tables of 12 and 13. The damage was minimal - under $300 for all 13 of us. I'd be back in a heartbeat.

The spinach and arugula salad was awesome! Ordered the fish and chips and I was disappointed that there was pepper in the breading--a warning on the menu would have been nice. Also, the fries were slightly overcooked. The cole slaw was very good-- not the ubiquitous maonnaise and vinegar, but subtle. Service was very prompt and friendly. We plan to go back and try other menu items that looked very interesting.

This place over delivered compared to my expectations even after reading the good reviews. The beer selection was top notch compared to other restaurants in the area, although I wish they had a few more on tap. The shrimp and grits are a must have and the mahi mahi blt is tasty. Service staff was excellent. I will definitely be visiting on my next trip to the OBX.

Best food in OBX? Quite possibly. The food here is insane. Insane, I tells you! Shrimp and grits. Fish and chips with mahi-mahi. Ridiculous. Even the fries are amazing; I could make a meal out of them alone. And don't forget the jerk wings. And don't sleep on their absolutely stellar beer menu. I have been know to eat here twice in one day. Just some of the best cooking anywhere, period. (This place is not huge and can't really sit a group larger than 6, so be aware of that.)

    (5)

The shrimp and grits were incredible! I've lived in Charleston, SC where shrimp & grits are famous, and this place definitely held it's own against the Charleston shrimp and grits scene!

This is a really small place, so don't go if you expect to get a large group in right away. We waited over 1-1/2 hours even though we got there at 5 pm. We decided anyplace would be about the same, so stuck it out and definitely felt it was worth the wait. The hostesses could not have been nicer. There was an outdoor waiting area with live music (guess one could also eat there as well). We had 12 folks and 2 babies, so took up a lot of room, but were never made to feel rushed. The food was fantastic. My 12-year old grandson said, "This was worth the wait." Impressive. Our group pretty much ran the gamut of the menu - everything from burgers, to shrimp & grits, to fresh fish special to fried oysters to fish tacos. My son-in-law, who is a little picky, had the "truck stop" and said it was sooooo good. The staff was so very nice, our server was awesome, and, besides the wait, it was a perfect experience. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. This is the real deal. But .... get there early and with the expectation that you will most likely be waiting.

Ok, fellow Yelpers!!! THANK YOU! We've been having rather mediocre meals out while here in OBX; this was a GREAT recommendation. I had the pulled pork sandwich and rice/beans (excellent! and only $9), and my husband ordered the shrimp and grits (as recommended highly by Yelpers), and it also was fantastic! The large shrimp were fresh, and when combined with grits w/cheese, bacon, and red peppers/onions, it just couldn't get much better! I agree it's a little tricky to find, so the hints were appreciated.

  • Amit S.

Service was great, beer selection really good, but food was way,way overrated. Based on the Yelp reviews, we were expecting a great meal, but were disappointed. I got the Crab Cake Sandwich (blackened) and my girlfriend got the Fish Tacos. Both didn't see all that fresh, and were under-whelming.

The location for this place is very deceiving. The back corner of a strip mall? No thanks. But we went anyway and oh man...we are glad we did. Everything our group of 12 got was AMAZING. Buffalo shrimp, delicious. Not too heavy on the breading, delicious buffalo sauce and nice, chunky bleu cheese. Calamari, delicious. Sauce was great and they were cooked perfectly. Many people at the table ordered salads and when they came out, I had to order one as well. They were beautiful. The caesar salad had a grilled lemon on top, carmelized onions, and even pieces of bacon!!! It was one of the best caesar salads I've ever eaten. Most of us got fish and chips. I couldn't even finish mine since there was so much to eat (so worth the price!) And the jalapeno remoulade was to die for. Other people got burgers, fish tacos, pasta, boullabaisse, fried oysters, etc. Not one person had anything to say except how incredible their food was. Don't let looks and location deceive you! Check this place out for sure!

Don't let the location fool you, it's in a strip mall but it was excellent. Family of four had an awesome lunch. I had the blackened mahi tostada, daughter had the salmon salad, hubby had the fish tacos. Super fresh, tasty, just enough heat. Every element of the tostada had purpose, cilantro cream, tomatillo sauce, best black beans and rice I can remember having. Who knew black beans could be that good? Excellent service, open scratch kitchen, friendly hostesses.

This was an absolutely wonderful place to eat, although it took a bit of searching to find it in the back of the little strip mall it inhabits. Although the restaurant itself is really small, there is a large swath of outdoor benches and tables that you can use to sit down and have a drink while waiting to be seated. I had the crab cakes, one fried and one broiled, and I cannot recommend the broiled crab cakes strongly enough! It had to have been the best crab cakes I've had in at least a year. The fried cake was also good, but the crab flavor was much more pronounced in the broiled one. I sampled a bit of the shrimp and grits, which was another top-notch dish. It was very rich but I savored every bite--and I'm not even a grits person. Finally, we finished off with a key lime pie which I managed to eat my share of despite thinking I was completely full. We went here on a Saturday, and if it were open Sundays we'd have visited it again the following day.

We had a group of hungry kids, and even though it was an hour wait they hooked us up with some delicious appetizers. The bartender with the curly hair (matt?) was the best. He recommended some excellent beer and wine options, and all together took care of us!

My wife and I ate at Blue Moon tonight. We had to wait almost an hour. The place was still packed at 9pm. It was not worth the wait. It was reasonable Southern Cooking but nothing special. The popularity baffled us. I ordered fried oysters. They were good but the French fries that came with them were too salty to eat. She ordered a pasta dish that was too rich to eat without much flavour. Why the crowd??

I was down in Nags Head this past weekend with hubby and some friends. We Yelped restaurants and saw all of the rave reviews for Blue Moon Beach Grill and had to check it out. We arrived Sat night around 6:45 and the bar was pretty full, put our name on the list and went to grab a beverage. The hostess was extremely nice and told us 20 minutes but if it was going to be longer she would let us know. About 10 minutes later the hostess said a table was paying and we were up. We got a table by the kitchen which was perfect viewing of all the yummy food. The guys got wings for an appetizer which had a delicious Cajun seasoning, very flavorful with a bit of spice. I had a side salad packed full of fresh, colorful veggies. For my entree I tried the swordfish with a pineapple mango salsa, jasmine rice and a coconut curry broth. The swordfish was cooked perfectly and it was a very generous piece. The rice and salsa were very nice but I do wish there was more of the broth. I'm not a big sauce person and would have liked more of the delicious coconut curry broth. Te hubby got mahi fish tacos which he scarfed down, he loved the cilantro sauce on the tacos which also came with beans and rice. Our friends each got the burger which was a hit and came with fresh cut fries. These were no frozen fries..full of seasoning and delish. I would highly recommend the Blue Moon Beach Grill. It's a little gem tucked away in a strip mall...who would have known! We will be back on our next trip to OBX!

My love and I don't get to see each other often. We came to the Outer Banks for Labor Day weekend and have been blown away by everyone and everything. We wanted to have a nice dinner out last night in town so I went on yelp and typed in Best Restaurant and this popped up. We got here around 8 and there was an hour and 15 minute wait. We hung out and then the hostess told us someone had left the bar so we jumped on it. Thankful she was looking out for us. We each had a drink and the fried green tomatoes with grilled shrimp and goat cheese which was amazing. Got seated I'd say about 30 minutes later. Our server was super sweet and on top of everything. We ordered the Seared Scallop appetizer which was incredible. For dinner we had the crab cake plate and the filet mignon. Both were excellent. The fries were probably the best I've ever had. Super soft but not soggy. My man was so impressed he got up, thanked the kitchen staff, and then bought them a round of tequila shots! Everyone was nice from the hostess to the manager. Thank you for making our last night here one to remember:-)

Little hidden gem tucked away in a strip mall. It's amazing. They don't have much seating but trust me it's worth the wait. Grab a pain killer drink at the bar and hang outside at the picnic tables. Sometime's they have live music plus great beer selection. My husband and I have been here twice and plan to go back every year we visit obx. Friendly staff, warm hostesses and amazing food. We've tried the fried green tomatoes with shrimp appetizer, soft shell crab sandwich, crab cake sandwich, seafood sandbar platter, grilled wahoo....all amazing dishes. Pricey but you get what you pay for. Large, flavorful portions plated beautifully. Fresh cut fries and the jalapeño sauce are to die for. The atmosphere is cozy, dimly lit with artwork from local artists. Just a tip, they don't take RSVPs.

This is a must visit in Outer Banks! I have been only twice but both times an amazing meal! Come expecting to wait a bit or sit at the bar but it is worth it! This visit I had crab cake sandwich (pictured). Loved it. My husband had the fish tacos and said they are the best he has ever had. Come hungry and enjoy!

The fun bartender and outstanding food make the hourlong wait on a Friday night well worth it. The mussels appetizer is an absolute must try - I'll be dreaming of that blue cheese broth long after my beach trip has ended. Our waitress steered us toward the night's specials - the yellowfin tuna in green curry broth and silky red snapper were well-seasoned and complemented by fresh veggies. Not to be outdone, the clam strips and oyster dinner were fried to perfection. Also have to mention the outdoor entertainment, a solo dude playing acoustic deep cuts from across musical genres, was the cherry on top of my favorite restaurant experience in the Outer Banks. The only thing that would make this spot better is if it were on the beach vs. in a strip mall.

Review Update: one year later, we came back as our top priority to get that key lime pie again this year. We were going to use it as a benchmark for the rest of the week's restaurants. So sorely disappointed were we in the entire meal, that this 5-star review falls to 2. First, we arrived early (like, 4:30 early) but still had a 30-minute wait. This isnt necessarily a bad sign, so we were happy to beat the real rush. Disappointment started with the buffalo shrimp appetizer; same as we ordered last year but this time, instead of being memorably fresh, it was just "ok." The crab cake dinner was equally as lackluster. This time, instead of a delicate fry, the cakes (which ARE still good on meat to filler ratio by the way) were dropped into the murky depths of a deep fryer for far too long. If only the hand cut fries could've achieved the same crispness, there might've been a saving grace for this meal that might be found on any bar menu up the coast. We tried something new this year with the Angels Delight, a pasta dish marketed as having a white wine butter sauce enveloping tomatoes, red pepper, shrimp, and lump crab meat. The portion of meat was ample, but the dish overall was surprisingly bland. The red peppers came from a jar, and the entire dish floated in its sauce, which was neither buttery not flavorful. Our biggest disappointment came after dinner was cleared away. We had held out hope. We ordered two so we wouldn't have to share. Our mistake. Maybe we had our hopes too high, but this key lime pie wasn't the tangy, creamy dream we remembered from last year. Once again, middle of the road and surely to be beat by another- but for that, we'll see. For all the hype and excellent reviews, were not sure why our experience was so mediocre. Maybe the chef was having an off night? Had we known, the 30-minute wait would not have been worth it (nor would the check! $21 for Angels Delight and a $28 market price on crab cakes and fries). We may try back next year, but we're not holding high hopes for this unassuming beach grill.

WOW. I've had great experiences so far in OBX, but really a lot of it has to do with places like Blue Moon. We did have to wait about 1 1/2 hours, but as you can see it still deserves 5 stars in my book. The service was outstanding. Our server was a gem, so helpful and polite. And after my mother-in-law was missing a side of veggies, our server apologized in excess and brought out some on the house. The food though. I got the Shrimp n Grits, and while I still plan to get the "real" thing in New Orleans sometime, it will be hard to beat Blue Moon's. Was much milder in spice than I expected, which was perfect to me. So great in every way, and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. Those cooks really know what they're doing, and as my family said, the whole staff runs like a well-oiled machine. Happy we found this place!

The crabcakes were the best I've ever had in my entire life!! They were a little pricey $28 on the market price. But in my opinion they were so worth it. The mixed vegetables that were served with that were really good also. The fried oysters had a great flavor and taste I would definitely get them again. The french fries were fresh-cut French fries. They had a wide selection of different craft beers and regular beer and a full bar. The oyster rockafeller was as good or better than anywhere!! Everything I ate was just perfect. The bartender was awesome too! Great experience. I will definitely be back!

Late last year, I took a short road trip to the Outer Banks. Mainly I wanted to see Jockey's Ridge State Park ( yelp.com/biz/jockeys-rid… ), but getting some crab was also high on my list. After using my Yelp app, I found Blue Moon Beach Grill (BMBG) with fantastic reviews. I headed over there to check it out. BMBG is in a strip mall, but who cares, right? The interior was so welcoming when I walked inside--with a nautical theme, artwork adorning the walls, and a beach club chic attitude on the side. My server that day was James and he was wonderful. Beautiful atmosphere--CHECK. Friendly and prompt service--CHECK. So, let's talk about the food... I ordered their specialty: Crab Cake Sandwich with lump blue crab (broiled--it has to be broiled in my humble opinion) toasted on a bun and their signature jalapeño remoulade with fries. That sandwich was THE BEST crab cake I have ever tasted, and I have traveled up and down the east coast. Are you ready for it? That Crab Cake Sandwich was an #OMG! Factor moment. Forget about those awful crab cakes with stringy crab and fillers. BMBG's Crab Cake Sandwich was a dream come true--that's what I dream about when I'm thinking of crab cakes. I completely enjoyed my meal at BMBG, and I can't wait to go back sometime in the near future. The staff is stupendous, the food is phenomenal, and the entire experience was a treat. If you are in the Outer Banks, run over to BMBG--you will not be disappointed.

Arrived at 8:00 on a Friday night and the place was packed. Hour and a half wait but the folks waiting outside on the picnic tables suggested we stay. Hostess very friendly so we're off to a good start. We had the mussels and chicken wings for apps while waiting. Very, very good. After being seated we were welcomed by our waitress Lauren who was fabulous. Friendly, efficient and nice. Food: Philly Cheese - excellent. Oysters Rockefeller - excellent. Fish and Chips were crispy and delicious. Only downside was the soup, came luke warm but Lauren quickly took care of it and brought a hot cup and one extra at no charge. Overall a strong 4 to 4.5. The wait was just too long, plan accordingly.

This is one of the best places in the Outer Banks! It's small so you will have to wait. We waited about 45 minutes at 5pm, but there were 8 of us. You can enjoy a drink from the bar while you wait or walk around to nearby shops if you have to entertain a 5 year old. The food is very good and reasonably priced. Everyone was very pleased with their meals. I had the fish tacos which were excellent. I highly recommend you save room for dessert. We had a pass around for dessert which was the best idea ever. We had the chocolate torte, cookies and cream cake, key lime pie and coconut pie. They were all delicious!

Very good food, but you'll have to wait. The buffalo shrimp had a little to much sauce for my taste, but was still good. The oyster rockefeller was very good. The entrees were also pretty solid.

3.5 stars rounded to 4... The place isn't the greatest in terms of decor and ambience. Random strip mall location. The tap water that was served tasted like salt water...??? I had to order a diet coke to drink because I couldn't handle it (and I NEVER drink soda). The food though was pretty good. I have to eat gluten free (celiac) and there was no gluten free menu or designated options on the regular menu like some reviews mentioned. Not sure what happened there. The server kind of knew what I could eat. She was trying to be helpful though. I ended up with the shrimp and grits...I knew it would probably be safe (which is was) and I love me some shrimp and grits! These were worth all the calories for sure. My husband also really enjoyed his crab cake sandwich (I was jealous haha). Not sure if I'll run back here if we visit the obx again, but the food was good.

Easily the best meal we have had in OBX! The house cocktails are superb. The Seagrass Martini is refreshing and dry, and pairs well with seafood dishes. The Goldrush is an adaptation of a classic whiskey sour with an interesting twist (ginger liquor), a sweeter drink that was a perfect way to end the meal. I enjoyed the shrimp and grits - they were notably some of the best I've ever had- and I lived 10 years in New Orleans! We rounded out the evening sharing a slice of chocolate chip pecan pie a la mode. The restaurant was hopping at 8 pm on a Sunday, but we managed to snag a pair of seats at the bar. Anna was a delight. Attentive, funny, and all around pleasant, she added a special shine to our night. I can't wait for my next trip to OBX so I can get back down here for another meal!

This place was really awesome! The only reason I took a star away was because the location .. If it wasn't for locals directing me to go there we would have easily missed it! So don't over look this place because it was GREAT!! We ate here during our vacation and my boyfriend got the philly cheese steak (one of his favorites.. He's eaten them in Philly many of times) he said that was probably the closest to an authentic Philly cheesesteak he's ever had for not being in Philly! I had the crab cakes they were out of this world. Full of meat not bready whatsoever. I got the special Marg for the night which was a fresh watermelon margarita it was fantastic as well. Our experience was completed with great prompt service! I would visit again if ever in the Outerbanks!

The food is delicious! Steak and cheese lovers you must come here! Two years in a row and my husband and daughter are leaving happy to have this as their last day meal. I had mahi tostadas and it was delectable! The spice used on the fish and sauce was amazing! In top of that the service is very friendly. I can't wait to come back next year:-)

Service is exceptional and super fast. Crab cake sandwich was amazing! Also ordered the pulled BBQ sandwich--also amazing. Side of sautéed veggies was yummy. This place has been added to our list of OBX faves!

We stopped in around 3pm during the week so we were seated right away. Oysters rockefeller was delicious. The chicken wings were great. They had a really heavy Jamaican flavor if that's what you like. The service was really good. We left around 4 and the place was really starting to get busy. I did not go to the restroom but my husband did and he thought it was really odd that it was a 1 person restroom for a place that has a bar and restaurant and gets super busy. As far as price goes, we got 3 apps and 3 sodas and the bill was $50.

Good people. Good food. Just hate the long wait. They should really become more customer-centric and take phone-ahead wait lists. I know they only get about a 5th of the business they would get from us if they did. And that's coming from a local -- their bread and butter.

    (4)
  • Cheryl G.

The Mahi Mahi BLT is the most amazing thing I have put in my mouth, and I'm pretty sure they sprinkled the fries with crack. No ketchup needed. Definitely worth stopping here if you are on the OBX

  • Kim M.

We ordered the buffalo shrimp, seared scallops, and fish tacos. We're really good!! Buffalo shrimp were crispy and nicely spiced, and the scallops were good and came on a bed of seaweed salad (they were a but too salty though). The tacos were HUGE and hearty. Upon seeing them we immediately realized that we ordered too much food!!

Review 363 on Blue Moon: I don't know what possibly more I can add. I don't know anyone in any affiliation with the restaurant, and was visiting as a tourist. For the life of me you'd never think this place would be in a strip mall. VERY modest prices I feel for a beach town. If you had a gun to my head, I can 100% vouch for the cheese steak, mani BLT, and Oyster Po Boy. All about $10 a piece...and a big helping of very good fries. Plenty of beers on hand. Kids who I was traveling with (and a few adults) enjoyed the burger as well. Said it was one of the best they had. Go here....I'd be shocked if you were disappointed. Service was EXCELLENT too.

Awesome dinner and service. Best crab cakes I have ever had. Had a party of seven the service was "over the moon" fantastic!

  • Nancy E.

Excellent! The wait staff was lovely-- the food was excellent! And each dish had a little something extra-- the Caesar salad had a grilled lemon and onions and bacon and the crab cake had zero filler! I honestly don't know what was holding it together! And I just got back from a week in Maryland-- these beat every Maryland crabcake I had!

  • Harrell R.

We arrived for lunch and had a 30 minute wait & they sent us a text message when our table was ready. We had a party of 6 and probably would've been seated quicker if we had a smaller party. Our server Victoria was excellent, our food was was delicious and the value for the dollar amount was great. I highly recommend this place!

  • Will A.

Meh. Not bad but not 4.5 stars. Had the fish and chips. Except for the fries, everything was wanting salt desperately, including the slaw. With a little help, they were decent. Portion size was fine. The wife had the shrimp not a burger that she says was great. In fact, she said she'd go back just for that. Maybe she'll review and balance out my opinion. I hate the 5 point scale.

Fantastic food and great staff. Very accommodating. We sat by the kitchen. As full as everyone was, even after dessert we saw awesome food coming out that we wanted!! Great place, highly recommended. Kid friendly.

This is a must stop restaurant during your vacation. We went to this place and the food, service and drinks were the best on the island. We had the calamari appetizer, fish tacos, and the tuna. Portions were large and the entire meal was cooked to perfection. You will not be disappointed. Caution, wait times are really long and they are not great for large groups. Leave the kids at home and have a great night out. Had the moonshine special. It was awesome! Can't wAit to return!

  • Mannie Q.

Great service, fun bar tenders. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with the other patrons in the restaurants, seems like the restaurant seems to attract groups of "entitled" men who leave 75 cents as tip while discussing their yachts. Yuck. Otherwise, The calamari was unique and delicious. Be sure to try the specials because the regular menu tends not to be as flavorful.

This place is fantastic. We had 5 adults and 5 kids and everyone was happy. The Pork Belly appetizer special was phenomenal and everyone enjoyed their entrees from the crab cakes, shrimp & grits, and bouillabaisse! We've eaten here the past 3 years and have never been disappointed.

This is one of the better restaurants in the OBX. Outdoor waiting area because there is always a wait. Excellent service, excellent food. One star off for weak drinks. You know they are weak when the bartender painstakingly pours one exact shot into a huge margarita! But, they are so friendly. Food is terrific. The crabcake is out of this world. One of the best. I would suggest, if you want a crabcake, to order the sandwich and eat it without bun if you like. This is much cheaper than the meal and one cake is plenty and filling. Good fries, too. Everything is really good. Octopus, fried oysters, fish and chips, grilled fish, etc. Prices are reasonable also. Atmostphere inside is tropical and fun. Once again, excellent service. We'll be back next year!

We went to Blue Moon based other yelp reviews. It is the off season here and were surprised that there was little wait. We took that as a good sign and ordered a glass of wine and waited for our table. The wine was a very generous pour, definitely not one of those places that asks you if you want a 4 oz or 8 oz pour. The restaurant is filled with local art and was nice to admire while we waited. We decided to try a variety of things. For an appetizer, the Calamari was good. It sat upon a lemon sauce that was a light and tangy. The calamari was lightly battered and golden. Overall very tasty. My son had the mahi mahi BLT and it was really good, served with a very generous portion of hand cut fries. A nice change from a typical burger. My husband had a crab cake sandwich. For a Marylander, this is hard to try outside of our own state, but it was good. Lump crab meat with little filler. It gets a thumbs up! I had the green tomato and shrimp Napoleon with goat cheese...yum yum! Different and not something I have ever seen on a menu before. I also had the spinach and arugula salad. I love a good salad and this one was unique with the pears, applewood bacon and pecans. The dressing was light and really let the flavors shine. Our sweet waitress talked us into dessert. All desserts were homemade for $6 each. A real selling feature. We enjoyed the Hershey's cake. The chocolate cake had white icing and drizzled with Hershey's syrup. Needless to say we left the plate empty. It was a fabulous dinner. The menu was filled with lots of great choices, including many pasta dishes. Blue Moon Beach Grill gets 5 stars based on good food for a very fair price.

We were visiting the Nags Head area from Birmingham, AL and found this place. And we're so glad we did! The photos of the crab cakes looked amazing, so that's what my dad ordered. He loved it. Full of crab meat and not filler breadcrumbs like so many other places. My mom ordered the Shrimp Not a Burger. Awesome...giant pieces of fried shrimp on a bun...can't get better than that. I ordered the Oyster Dinner, but substituted the oysters for shrimp and I loved it. For dessert we had the key lime pie and bourbon pecan bread pudding. This is definitely a place we will eat at again when in the area!

awesome place! Never would have gone to this without yelp. It's unassuming and hidden in a strip mall-like location. The shrimp/fried green tomato app was okay, but I wouldn't order again. Everything else was amazing -- mussels with blue cheese, pear/spinach salad, chicken sandwich, oyster po boy were off the charts. Service was A+ and the kids loved their food. A very good experience.

We enjoyed our meal thoroughly, one of the better restaurants we have eaten at so far down here at the Outer Banks. Their fries and the ranch dressing are both homemade and that always impresses me when they go that extra mile. My fiancé ordered the cheese steak and one of the choices for cheese was home made cheese whiz! Which was a nice touch, coming from Pennsylvania I really appreciated the thoughtfulness in offering that option. My burger was flavorful and juicy and hit the spot. They also have a nice cocktail list and craft beer selection. Next time in Outer Banks we will be back!

Excellent, excellent fresh fish and flavor. The fish tacos were not the small Mexican type, but the Mahi Mahi in them was delicious. Pork sandwich was also a kid favorite with an excellent BBQ sauce.

  • Gigi S.

This place was the best restaurant experience we had in the OBX. The wait was long for a Sunday night, but they had outdoor seating and live music to keep us entertained until our table was ready. Started with fried calamari, which was delicious. Hubby ordered the soft-shell crab special that came with fiddleheads... he loved it and is still talking about it days later. I had the Mahi Mahi BLT and thought it was great. Fries on the side were delish! Drinks were expensive - ordered the Painkiller and it was $9. Service was attentive and prompt.

The service was great and very friendly. The food was fresh and amazing. They have a variety of specials available daily and there is almost always a wait to get a table, but it is worth it.

I make it a point to stop in every time I visit OBX. The food & service is outstanding! I'm a big fan of their cheese steak sandwich. Other family members enjoyed their meals just as much. Their Caesar salad is one of the best I've had as well. A definite must for a lunch or dinner spot. You won't be disappointed!! They also have items from talented local artists for purchase!.

Party of 7. The tomatoe-corn-crab soup had good flavor but everyone kept asking where's the corn and where's the crab? Ceaser salad was described as great. Fish tacos where a solid 4 of 5. The fish and chips where solid 4 of 5. The tuna was given a solid 4 of 5. Angel Delight described as great. The bouillabaisse was given a terrible 1. I tried it and agree. Atmosphere and people deserve a solid 5. Great bar selection of beers and wine.

  • Erica C.

My husband and I were able to find seats at the bar immediately and had a very pleasant experience. The bar tender was so attentive and up beat. The fried green tomatoes with shrimp Napoleon and buffalo shrimp were excellent. Hands down the best dining experience in OBX.

A great place. Been coming here forever, we came here tonight and I asked to split a special with my sister and they brought out the dish split with all of the extras on each plate so we each had the sides of veggies and rice with the fish split. 5 stars it was amazing.

  • John C.

There was a long wait, for a Monday night, but it was worth it. We had a cheesesteak, shrimp and grits, and an Angel's Delight. Everyone raved about their food. And the desserts were very good too. Family friendly atmosphere.

  • Hayleigh S.

Everything was marvelous from the prices, to the food, to the drink options. I got the enchiladas from the Specials menu and they were amazing. My mom got a caesar salad which I tasted, and it was extraordinary. The waitress Megan M. was amazing. Every time we needed a drink she would come by and get us a new one. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time as well. I would definitely go to the Blue Moon again.

Stopped here around 7ish and was told there is 1 1/2 to 2 hour wait. Maybe it's that good or maybe that slow but we are on vacation and aren't waiting for maybe's. After receiving a notice from Cara G. whom I am guess is a manger, owner, or works there telling me how unfair it is a gave them 1 star because we didn't eat there. How the 1st 2 weeks are the busiest in OBX and if I want good food at 7 pm I am going to wait. How they offer entertainment to help with the wait. How they wish the owners could rate customers. Well here's the whole deal, I was being nice in the fact I just left a small review saying your very busy and not good if you didn't know this place was this busy and in a hurry. So here is your full review from a family who didn't make it in to eat. We get there and the guy standing at the hostess stand asked how many, I told him 3, his answer well its going to be 1 1/2 to 2 hours wait. Before I could say one word to him he was asking the next guess how many. I asked if it's a 2 hour wait and you close at 9 would we be able to order the whole menu or would it be a reduced one. He gave me a look like I was the stupid one. Living so close to Washington DC when you get told you could be seared close to closing time they offer a different menu. At that point we just left cause once again he went to another person and asked how many. Now Cara G. You asked why I gave you 1 star without eating there. Its cause your employees over look some customers, and go on to others, never once was I told or even giving a chance to put my name in to wait so we never got a chance to eat there. So next time you feel the need to try and make someone fill small about a review by writing them make sure it isn't someone who has no problem tell the whole story or will call you out about you.

Oh boy, where to begin. Friendliest staff in the Outer Banks, outstanding food, great atmosphere. The prices were almost below what I would have been willing to pay, and the food (once again) was terrific. Start your meal with the Calamari. There are whole squids in an incredible sauce that I was half tempted to drink with a spoon after we were finished. There is also nowhere else around here I would more so recommend you buy a shrimp dish. Served over pasta here is the way to go (looking for shrimp scampi? Go with the Angels Delight). We chose this place because of the raving Yelp reviews and weren't let down. Hope to return soon!

I don't give many fives, yet I would give Blue Moon a 10 if I could. All the way around, this place does it well. We chose Blue Moon based upon the Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed at all. We arrived about 1:30 on a Tuesday afternoon. Given that it's still sort of the off season I wasn't expecting a wait, but the place was jam packed and running a 20 minute wait. Given that I had two kids with me, I asked the bartender if she minded if we waited at the bar. She was so great that we decided to go ahead and order our food at the bar. Given that they were so busy and with a few large parties to boot, I figured the food might come out a little slow. No need to worry. Our food arrived very quickly and was so, so good. The crab cakes were perfection. Loaded with crab and almost no filler. My older son had shrimp, which were huge and perfectly cooked. The french fries are fresh cut and absolutely addicting. The staff were all so friendly and as the place cleared out, they stopped to chat and offer tips on the area, etc. An excellent experience!

I'm torn about how to rate this restaurant... I LOVE the food.. but HATE having to wait toe at here. We go about once a summer... but its always a production... we have to put our name down, wait, and wait, and wait some more. I really wish they would take reservations because their food is some of the best on the beach! That said, you cant go wrong with most of the items on the menu. The fish tacos are great... so is the fried green tomato napoleon appetizer.

  • Jerry A.

Incredible food. I had the fish tacos and my wife loved what she had too. The desert was visually awesome looking and nothing short of superb as well. The best beer selection I found in outer banks now. They actually had Victory Brewing from Philadelphia Pa. I can't say a bad thing about this place. The restaurant wasn't busy but they were kid friendly with us. Have them these sticks to play with and were tolerant of them being kids. The bar, very nice with tv's spread across. The view of the boats and water was perfect too. Highly recommend and we'll be back guaranteed. Not overpriced too. Very reasonable.

Absolutely amazing, flavorful and fresh. You might have to wait an hour or two to be seated but it is well worth it! I have been coming to the Outer Banks for years and I don't know how I ever missed this place. It will never happen again.

By far my favorite restaurant in OBX. The food is fresh and local and it's always a consistently good meal. My favorites are the shrimp and grits and the shrimp and goat cheese fries green tomatoes. Just amazing food all the way around.

I'm writing this for all those parents out there looking for a great, easy going place to take the kids. We visited Blue Moon last night with 4 kids under the age of 5. We got there right at 5pm and seated after a 5 minute wait. Our waitress was very helpful and continued to check on us throughout our meal. The kids food came out super fast and was delicious. Good sized portions! The adult food was also quite good (cheese steak, swordfish, portabella mushroom, and fish tacos). Kids were able to be kids and parents were able to relax. Thanks for the fun evening:)

This place is a hidden jewel. You would never know its there unless someone tells you. It's located in one of the shops where the Harley Davidson store is in the outer banks. It's very small so the wait time is long but so worth the wait.

  • Mike C.

Some great beers on tap. Especially liked the shrimp and fried green tomatoes appetizers. The blackened crab cake dinner was one of the best I've ever had. Waitress was great. Owner/manager came over to see if everything was OK. This is my new favorite dinner spot in OBX

We arrived right when the restaurant opened. The service was wonderful. The food was amazing with wonderful flavor combinations. We recommend the Mahi BLT and the Shrimp "Not A Burger". These dishes were delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for and awesome dining experience. The blue moon on tap compliments everything well!

Came here for lunch. My party sat at the bar which has a good 3 TV setup for watching sports. I ordered the Mahi Mahi BLT and was treated to a great sandwich. The mahi mahi was cooked just the right amount, flaking at the touch of a fork. The jalapeño remoulade complimented the sandwich nicely and was incredible with the fries. They have a great selection of beers, mainly from local NC breweries. Last but not least, the bartender was a sweetheart and made all of us a grapefruit sour cocktail which was insanely delicious.

Hands down THE BEST shrimp & grits ever and great service!! The wait takes a while, but when you taste the food - you will see why, totally worth it!!

Stopped in here for lunch ordered a sweet tea and Mahi Mahi BLT. The bartender was extremely kind and quick which was much appreciated at the lunch hour. My meal was great and the fresh tomatoes are really fresh! I would absolutely go back.

Outstanding food, great atmosphere, my family had a wonderful time. Don't skip dessert!

Best scallops I have EVER had!! This restaurant is hands down the best one in OBX! :) And the wait service was top notch!

  • James A.

Absolutely phenomenal flavors, friendly staff and exceptional craft beer selection. We liked it so much, we decided to return for lunch the following day after experiencing such an excellent dinner. The seafood is exceptionally fresh and prepared by a skilled kitchen staff that is completely open and viewable. Our food arrived promptly, was piping hot and proportioned very generously. Do not miss this place if you're in the area. It's easy to drive right by as it doesn't face the road but just pull in when you see a Harley-Davidson sign and you're there.

Delightful and delicious! Fresh and different with specials nicely! Fabulous desserts...we ordered five and shared them around the table! A definite repeat!!

Excellent lunch. Crabcake (broiled) was full of crabmeat. Family had the Mahi Mahi BLT and a Cheeseburger. Everyone was super pleased with the food and service.

  • Ken L.

Dinning room was busy even at 14h00, mostly locals (which is usually a good sign) Service was awesome, seafood was fresh and well done, was not over seasoned or oily. I had the shrimp and andouille sausage on Spanish rice - was quite tasty Good eats!

  • Theresa P.

This could have been one of the best meals I've had on the OBX but there was so much grease smoke in the restaurant and we were seated right in front of the kitchen. Spoke to the manager about it only to get an "I'm sorry." My eyes were burning so badly I had to get my meal boxed and leave. Big disappointment.

  • Cathy B.

Always good. Sometimes crowded and hard to get a seat/ long wait....food and service: excellent!!

  • Jeffrey K.

Service was excellent, we try to eat paleo and they were able to make a great meal for us. Nice bar style atmosphere a little loud but it is a bar.

    (4)
  • David O.

Food was all good, and the place was busy. Our issue was more with the execution & delivery: I had the Angel's delight, which was very nice. Shrimp was good size and not over cooked. Crab was tasty if not overly plentiful. However, my partner had the shrimp and grits, which must have been done early and been left waiting, because it was cold on arrival. They did remake her dish, but by the time she received it, I had been finished with my meal for five minutes. On unrelated note, their house blend habanero sauce has a very nice flavor and complimented the seafood.

  • Louis y.

Price like NYC. Service is fast and attentive which is 5 stars. Food just ok for $$$. With lack of quality foods in the area. this might be your best bet, make sure you come earlier, they enter your mobile number into their system and txt you when your table is about to be ready.

    (3)
  • Stacy K.

The food is incredible! Our waitress Kimberly was also very polite, super fast, i don't think my glass reached the bottom once. The fried calamari is so good. The place was really busy but the food came out fast and again Kimberly was awesome.

  • Brian W.

Simply great seafood dining. It's located in the rear corner of an unremarkable strip shopping center but don't let that deter you. Their seafood is unmatched. A must-dine location while on the OBX

  • Lili H.

We ate dinner here last night and all the meals were awesome. My son couldn't decide between the Mahi BLT and the Beach Burger so my husband and him split it. They added bacon, fried egg and Swiss and raved about it. I got the angel hair pasta with lump crab and shrimp. Amazing! The salad that came with it was huge for a side salad and tons of veggies which I love. The 3 desserts we split topped it off. The staff was so friendly, thanks for making our first night awesome

Delicious fish tacos and shrimp with grits!! Totally understanding with regards to my lactose intolerance. I would totally recommend this place to everyone

While not a local by any means - I lived in the Outer Banks for a bit, and visit every year. There are a few places I recommend to all friends who visit, and this was not on the list... until now! I have been going to the Country Deli, the small sandwich shop virtually next door, for about 10 years. Never did I take notice of this spot, or check Yelp for reviews. What a mistake. This place is AWESOME. There was a wait but for good reason. Our appetizers, scallops and oysters rock killed it. Entrees were delicious, huge, and well priced. Service was great despite a packed house. All in all, this is one of my top restaurants on the Outer Banks now. -Jim

  • Rodney K.

My favorites at the OBX have been Kill Devil Grill and Red Sky but I must now add Blue Moon to make it a trifecta! Kimberlee our waitress was the best. Mahi blt to die for! Wing and buffalo shrimp were awesome!

    (5)
  • Brandon T.

I stopped into Blue Moon for lunch and the thing that I remember most is that the food was amazing. I love a place with some good wings and Blue Moon has some of the best! MMMmmmm my mouth is watering just thinking about them right now! For my entree I ordered the Chicken Decluck and it was also very tasty. The pineapple and jerk flavors blended so well together. I will be going back there whenever I am in Nags Head!

  • G M.

Good food. Good beer. Good atmosphere. All at a reasonable price. What else could you ask for in a local place. Like another reviewer stated, the only downside to this place is that it is tucked away in a small shopping center and not seen from the "big road". We've been coming to the OBX for nearly two decades and just found this place. Blue Moon has a very expansive and complex menu for a smaller beach restaurant. Anything from fish, to burgers, to pasta. The beer selection is well above average...especially for a beach place. Good selection of craft beers. The waitstaff was attentive even during a busy lunchtime rush. The kitchen had no problem with a special order for my daughter. Excellent spot for the family and the bar area looked good for a drop in if you happen to be solo. Will return!

    (5)
  • Elizabeth W.

Staff was super friendly and the food was awesome. I had the shrimp and grits - good sized shrimp, great sauce, and yummy Gouda. Wow!! Everyone was please with their meal. We will definitely come back when we return to OBX.

  • RL R.

Love this place. Great shrimp & grits. Seared scallops for an app were fresh & delicious. My husb got angel hair pasta with lump crab & shrimp. Also quiet good. Beer list was extensive enough to make us both happy. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Desert was lemon blueberry bread pudding. Yummy! (odd thing was all the food was phenomenal so I was surprised when they added canned whip cream to my dessert. Place this good I would've expected fresh...but everything else was such a plus including the bartender (she was right on with her Shift beer suggestion)& friendly waitress who was working a crazy dinner rush.

    (5)
  • Karyn K.

We read great reviews if this place. Get here early it fills up quickly and you will wait awhile for a table! Food was excellent. The scallops appetizer were some of the best I've had. Mahi mahi fish and chips is a great idea. The crowning glory was the lemon coconut bread pudding - seriously TO DIE FOR! Yum!!! Make it a definite stop on your trip for good food in a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Joanna H.

Easily one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure to dine in. My husband and I ate at the bar on a Saturday night due to the long wait. The bartender was fabulous. The Blue Moon margarita is perfect - clean and balanced though too small. My husband had the shrimp and grits - the best we've had and he is from Nagshead. I had the Angel pasta - shrimp, crab, tomatoes - wonderful! You have to try it!!!

One of the Better "Go To" Restaurant on the OBX.

  • Michael P.

This place was superb! Great food! Great service! Go early for quicker seating, BUT the wait is worthy.

    (5)
  • Melissa B.

Found this place while laying on the beach and looking at the "nearby" restaurants years ago and couldn't have been more happy with my discovery. It is tradition now to ALWAYS come for dinner here while visiting the OBX. The fish tacos are the best I have EVER had, and when I have tried other selections- I have NEVER been disappointed.

    (5)
  • Jason N.

Ate here last night from a recommendation from a friend and man I don't think you could go wrong here. Great atmosphere, great service and great food. I had the fried oysters and they were prepared perfectly. Can't wait to come back to this little place.

  • Kara H.

We have been vacationing in the OBX for many years now and for some reason had never dined here before. We were making a mistake! We went for lunch and had James as our server. He was knowledgeable and very friendly. He had the ladies order first (very polite, I love that). We ordered our drinks along with the scallops and wings as appetizers. Those were both delicious. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the wings were nice sized and so yummy. James timed our food very well and our sandwiches were nice portions. We had the beach burger and added a fried egg, clam po boy, pulled bbq and the philly. My husband said that this is the best bbq he had had in a long time. The fries are clearly cut in house. Everything was fresh and so good. This is a must eat at restaurant in the Outer Banks.

  • Megan H.

Don't let the outside mislead you, the inside is great! My husband got the Mahi Mahi BLT and it was amazing... But he loved my fish tacos more because the mahi mahi fish tacos are beyond incredible!!! They have a large selection of beer, wine, and a well stocked bar. Highly recommend!!!

  • Chris S.

Great food selection, very courteous staff, and a nice beer selection. Not much else to say. Check it out.

  • A. K.

Great food, but the wait (and the waitstaff) diminish the rating on this place. We've been twice and had great food both times- the menu has a range of seafood and non-seafood options, but. The fish tacos were particularly delicious. But the wait at this place. . .holy smokes. And not just to get a table. Once seated, we waited five minutes for drink. 20 for food. After a 30 minute wait for lunch (it only gets longer for the dinner seating), it was off-putting. And the waitstaff is so obviously harried that they're brisk at best, downright rude at worst. That said, if you don't mind a wait and don't need to like the person who takes your order, the food is worth the visit.

    (3)
  • Matt N.

I take my family here every time I am in Nags Head. There cheese steak is killer and they always have fresh menu options. They always have great fresh food. People are nice and the restaurant is clean and well put together. The location is deceiving as it is tucked in the corner of an older strip mall. The windows are all blacked out and it does not look that inviting. The interior is much nicer and it has great local art hanging.

  • Trish D.

Decided on this restaurant for lunch with my mother and sister during vacation. The food was delicious!!!! The fried green tomatoes were indescribable. Definitely worth the stop! Everything was so good

I found this place on yelp while vacationing this past September and had a great meal of crab cakes. The next day I asked locals for some recommendations and this place came up again so I think it's got a pretty steady rep for good seafood. I sat at the bar (last available seat - tables were pretty full as well) for lunch and had great service from the bartender and some conversation with the locals. A fun little place with good seafood and service - I'll be sure to return on my next trip.

  • David A.

Nothing pretentious, just really great food and a wonderful staff. I can't wait to go back! Been coming to OBX for the past ten years and Blue Moon is our new favorite.

One of the best dinning experiences I've had. Everything was excellent - the food, the staff, the drinks, even how clean the restrooms were. You guys need to open up a restaurant in Washington DC!

  • James S.

Driving through Nags Head we found this great place to eat. We had lunch here twice and the food was delicious. We tried the Fish tacos, and "not a shrimp burger". Awesome...... Great beer selection to boot. Staff rocks, great and pleasant service.

  • Caroline B.

The reviews don't lie, this was a great stop! We would have gone more but we were staying in Duck. I had amazing fish tacos, husband had pulled pork and the kids had chicken fingers-all were fresh and flavorful. We also had their margaritas and they were fantastic. Service great, only a short wait during a busy lunch.

  • Gary E.

Wow - is this place a find! Don't be dissuaded by the nondescript restaurant front along the small stripmall of stores - a comfortable bar/restaurant ambiance awaits within. The low key atmosphere completes the fair prices on both food and beverages. Fair prices however, would mean nothing if not paired to exceptionally good seafood - well seasoned, well prepared (not over cooked) and well presented. Portions are quite good as well. I sure that there are seafood doyennes out there who would croak that 5 stars is a bit much compared with major city restaurants, and that is perhaps true. But I'm pretty well travelled, and I find food of this quality, at this price point, quite rare. Can't wait to check out its new sister restaurant Blue Water grill, just after the bridge to the inn we're staying at in Mateo. The ambiance looks to be a little fancier, and it's on the water. Really - this was a surprisingly delightful meal!

First time in OBX and read reviews for this place so decided to stop in. Place was packed and they don't take reservations. They don't have a lot of tables which really made it challenging. Luckily after 15 min, a few people got up from the bar and I grabbed the seats at the bar. Anna the bartender was very nice and personable, worked the whole counter like a pro. I got the soft shell crab and my wife got the blackened fish sandwich. Food was good, Anna the bartender was really good but the limited seating is what limits this place. Show up at 4:30 or you'll be waiting.

    (4)
  • Britt A.

The service was excellent as well as the Mahi BLT. We planned to come for dinner the night before but it was a hour wait so we came back for lunch the following day! And couldn't have been more please!

  • Ann R.

Very good food! We Suggest the green fried tomatoes and shrimp!! Philly cheese sandwich was excellent! Along with fish tacos! The bartender was a delight and very attentive!!

Quiet location in a strip mall, but quite a find - thanks Yelp!. Good tap beer selecion (not just Blue Moon :)). Oysters rockefeller, shrimp+grits, soup were tasty.

  • Kevin W.

I found this place via Yelp for lunch. As we pulled up my wife thought I was crazy since the grill is not exactly inviting. She immediately thought I had taken us to a run down dive bar lol. I assured her the reviews were great and said wait until we get inside to pass judgement. Lo and behold, as soon as we stepped in, she was in love with the place. I had the fish tacos (amazing!) and the wife had the burger and fries. Everything was fantastic. We highly recommend this place.

  • Clay S.

Found this place on Yelp. Tucked away in a little strip mall, we would have never noticed it! Great food, service, staff. Sat at bar with attentive, helpful bartender. Ordered drink of the day (strawberry lemonade vodka) & a craft beer with a friend. Shared the Blackened shrimp & fried green tomato Napoleon - it was amazing & remoulade was spectacular. The BBQ pork sandwich & the oyster po boy followed. Both were delish, but the po boy was outstanding. The French fries were simply amazing! The place was packed, Including the bar. Lots of locals, which is a great sign. Don't miss out!

    (5)
  • George H.

Because we are very impressed by the people behind the bar! They were an amazing team, very kind, warm friendly and efficient. The food was ample! We were stuffed just with an order of fish and chips and a Caesar's salad and the fries were so plenty, we never saw the bottom of the basket! No comments about table service as we never sat at the table. But the guys behind the bar, kudos! You guys really do a great job!

  • Natty S.

Despite relying on the better reviews to pick going here for lunch, the food did not live up to it. Service was good, very prompt, friendly. Food was underwhelming, only item that was descent enough to mention was the jerk wings. Other than that, the fries were cold, limp, undercooked. Pulled pork sandwich bad all around. Oh well, place was not for me

  • Melissa W.

Nothing fancy, but I what they do, they do extremely well. Amazing crabcakes, great bar, really good buffalo shrimp. Say hi to Jess the bartender on Saturdays.

  • Jessie O.

This was the best meal we've had in the outer banks. We were a little nervous when we got there and the wait was 35-40 minutes but we decided to wait anyway. We were sat within 15 minutes and it was so worth the wait. My husband and I both had the shrimp and grits and it was out of this world good. The others with us had the fish and chips and the braised portabella and both raved about it. It's definitely worth a stop when in the OBX.

    (5)
  • Jeannie M.

Outstanding, wonderful, great, delicious. One of the best restaurants on the Outer Banks, and beyond. I live here and this is one of my top 5 places recommended to visitors and families.

    (5)
  • Eric P.

Although we had a pretty long wait, this place was worth it. The food was outstanding as well as the service. I had the shrimp and grits which was outstanding. Fish tacos and fried oysters were also very good. We had a mussel app that was probably the best mussel dish I've ever had. Also a decent tap selection although small. All and all expect to wait but it's because it's so good.

    (5)
  • Traci K.

The food was terrific and the blueberry margarita out of this world! Come early for dinner to avoid the wait.

    (5)
  • Eileen S.

Excellent service. Went early during the off season so did not have to wait. Mussels appetizer big enough for a meal and fabulous. Would go back anytime on the OBX.

  • Linda M.

We were just in town for the night and went to Yelp for help. This place got 4.5 stars, and it did not disappoint! When we first walked in, the wait for a table was an hour and 45 min, but luckily there was space for two at the bar. That wait time shows how popular this place is! The Crab and Andouille Gumbo was a great starter. We ordered the Yellow Fin Tuna salad, which had candied nuts, pickled watermelon, strawberries, and goat cheese, with a sweet balsamic dressing and the Tilefish with mushroom risotto and grilled mixed vegetables. Dessert was Key Lime pie. Everything was fabulous. Our server/bartender was fantastic. We asked her to recommend a beer to go with our dinner and she gave us two good choices, and we chose her first choice, Fullsteam Carver. Excellent choice! She was really great because when we asked a question about an ingredient and she didn't know, she would find out! Great food, great service!

  • Joc B.

there are no cooks at the Bluemoon Beach Grill, only chefs. this is becoming our favorite place to go, the people are friendly, the food is five star and the prices are a bargain. everything is really good here but try the Philly steak sandwich sometime, you'll really be surprised

  • Charlie B.

I found this restaurant after researching online reviews and boy was it good! Though, if I hadn't known that it was near milepost 13 I might have missed it, because it's in a partially obscured shopping strip. There was a good crowd inside but we were promptly seated. It was clean, had nice decor and art for sale. I had one of the lunch specials which was peppered puppy drum with jasmine rice and green beans. The fish was awesome and the fresh green beans were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The rest of the menu looked so good, a return trip is in the future. I've heard the Mahi-Mahi BLT is excellent! We spoke to several locals later that said it's their favorite restaurant in OBX. Greeted at the door, seated quickly, order taken quickly, excellent food served promptly with a smile, and a "thank you for coming" as we left. A beginning to end great experience. I can't even find something to quibble about.

  • Rob K.

Had a great meal here with my family on one of our nights out. You should go before 5:00pm if you don't want to wait forever to be seated. But the food and atmosphere are worth the wait!!!

  • Andrea K.

Awesome! Cute little surprise. Everyone is nice and the shrimp and grits are amazing! A must try! The fish and chips was decent but the mahi mahi was missing something. The French fries were the best I had all weekend!

  • Brooke P.

Delicious! The fries were yummy and we had oyster po boys...amazing! The service was good - nice and accommodating.

  • Tim M.

Love this place. As long as you can get in the food is great, service is fine and owners are friendly. Went last night and my wife had the tile fish special. It was really good and I had my regular, the fish and chips. Often it is difficult to find a table available in the summer because the place is so popular, but sitting at the over sized bar is just as good and easier to find a seat sometimes. Last night (Monday) was great and we came in an went right to a table for 2. Nice full bar with lots of wine choices and always the freshest fish available. Do yourself a favor and try this place for lunch or diner.

An hour wait during the busy hours, but well worth it. Food was terrific and service was great. Nice atmosphere and great service.

Don't be put off by the location in a strip mall across from a Harley dealer. This is a true foodie's delight in OBX! Service was quick and attentive. The wine list is thin, but there are some viable selections. The beer list was a bit better. Chef obviously takes a lot of care with his specials of the day, and on our trip there we partook. The soup was Pumpkin and Crab Bisque -- odd, yes it seems. But the creamy soup was spiced just right to evoke pumpkin pie (ginger, nutmeg, mace, cinnamon) and the fin meat complimented nicely. My wife had the lamb chops, which were generously cut and done to perfection. I had the "voodoo pasta," which had plenty of kick without overwhelming the flavor of the dish. The children's menu was typical fare, but the kitchen was happy to modify one of the dishes from the menu down to child size and my toddler enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately the desserts listed by the server weren't presented in a way that convinced us to indulge. If chef puts half the thought into dessert as he does his soups, I'm sure they will become great!

    (5)
  • T M.

Amazing!!! The scallops were cooked to perfection, the flavors sent my taste buds into unknown regions. The fried green tomato Napoleon was outstanding! What a pleasant surprise to find such a gem in a strip mall! Thank you, Yelp, for helping us find it!

  • John H.

Great food and fantastic service. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Loved the grilled jerk wings appetizer and the grilled tuna special was delicious. Kids enjoyed the broiled mahi mahi basket and chicken tenders basket. Great experience and we very much appreciate that kids are welcomed here!

Food was excellent; I had a blackened and BBQ chicken sandwich "chick decluck" and Leslie had an aragula salad with shrimp. Beer selection was good and quite unique Matt was awesome with his beer recommendations.

  • Lauren G.

Yum. This place was fantastic. It was pretty small and very crowded so the hubs and I were happy to run into friends of ours who had just been seated and had room at their table. Score! After quickly scanning the menu, I knew I was going to have a hard time deciding. I went with a cup of crab and blue cheese bisque and the soft shell crab sandwich. The bisque was out of this world. I wished I had ordered a bowl! The sandwich was great as well. Hubs had the same thing actually..and was equally happy about his meal. I was hoping I had room for dessert so I could try try the key lime pie...but no go. We're already planning our trip back to OBX next year..and I will definitely be making a trip back to the Blue Moon Beach Grill!

If you are looking for something other than boring fried or broiled seafood, you hit the mother load. You may have to wait to get in, but well worth it. Fresh food with integrity, at last!

We came in for the marathon and stopped here....SOOO glad we did. Awesome staff, service is very good, food was excellent too. This has just moved to the top of the list for favorite OBX restaurant. Nice job guys.

Located between the beach road and the bypass at mp 13 is the Blue Moon Beach Grill. This is a casual dining spot, so flip flops are cool. Not that I would ever wear flip flops...just sayin'. We went there with some OBC friends, and everyone liked it. There were fish tacos, crab bisque, a burger and I had the fish and chips. The food was all good, but I thought the sides were great. Really good crispy fries, great rice and beans (the rice and beans reminded me of a Portuguese dish my grandmother used to make ) and nice slaw. It's on our list.

    (5)
  • Karen G.

Very small, but what it lacks in size they more than make up for in fabulous food! We had the french fries for an appetizer - very good! They weren't the standard frozen fries - they were handcut and crispy! Soooo good! I had the shrimp and grits. Excellent! The only thing that might have been missing was some bread to sop up the sauce that topped the entree! OMG, it was so good! My husband had the fried Oyster dinner. He loved it! Prior to that he had a cup of the crab and blue cheese bisque. After trying it, he wished he'd ordered a bowl or two. I tasted it - YUM! For dessert, I had the key lime pie, which was generous and very tangy and scrumptious! Hubby had the pineapple glazed cheesecake, another thumbs up! The price was good, the food excellent and the atmosphere OBX-y :) A definite must!

Blue Moon Beach Grill is a gem in a strip mall. We had carryout last year and wanted to experience dining in at Blue Moon. The staff is very friendly and truly seem to value their customers. Yes, the pumpkin and crab bisque is amazing and yes, it seems everything on the menu is great! I had a special that day, which was a grilled chicken sandwich topped with lump crab and applewood bacon. The sandwich was perfectly put together and the accompanying fries were really tasty. My partner also had a daily special of yellowfin tuna over a rice and black bean mixture. The tuna was cooked perfectly and the black beans were well seasoned making it a little bit spicy. We took home a slice of pie (Oreo cream) which was very tasty but nothing too special. When in Nags Head, be sure to eat here!

  • Michael C.

I'm visiting from DC and this is easily the best restaurant I've eaten at in the area. The regular menu seems better suited for lunch (sandwiches, etc.), but the specials made for an excellent dinner. The standouts were the fish special and the panko shrimp plate. The mahi BLT was alright, but not nearly as good as some of the other dishes. The coconut cream pie was also great. The service was quick and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was a pretty casual atmosphere, but it was clean and lively. There were some surprisingly interesting options on the menu, and the chef pulled them off. Definitely recommended!

  • Sean K.

I have to say that yelp reviewers are right on. The place is OUTSTANDING! Great servers. Excellent Food. Kid friendly. It is small. I had the best fish taco I have ever had (that is not saying much but it was excellent). People in our party had pasta and crab cakes which they all liked. It is a neighborhood place that welcomes the tourists (that would be me). The beach store next door also had some deals.

    (5)
  • Judith N.

Definitely one of the better food finds on the Outer Banks. I especially liked the shrimp and grits. If you want to bypass the long wait for a table eat at the bar which is first come first serve.

    (4)
  • Jenn S.

So glad I made my friends trust Yelp and go here for dinner! Awesome atmosphere - laid back but still felt a little more upscale than just a beach town joint. Nice staff and amazing food!!! Tried buffalo shrimp and fried green tomato apps, then pulled pork and fish tacos. You don't want to stop eating!! Prices were reasonable for such delicious food. We were torn between trying more yelp favorites and going back here our last night for dinner.

  • John S.

Went there for dinner on a Friday night, place was busy but wait staff was friendly and pleasant. The fish tacos were very tasty and the rice and beans served on the side were excellent. The beans are highly seasoned and a bit spicy but really good. Jill had the crab cake sandwich and the remoulade that came with it had some finely chopped jalapeño in it which gave it some extra kick which made it excellent. The fries had promise but seemed to come out a little soggy. Aside from that, great place to eat.

This place is kinda hidden. It's located in a strip mall. The decor is very nice. Very spacious restaurant. I ordered beer battered fish and chips! It was very tasty!!! Service was good. Price was decent. I would come back here.

Food is pretty good but not worth the wait. Hostesses should be more honest about the wait. We we're quoted 30-45 minutes for a table on a Thursday night. We waited more than an hour to be seated and then another 35 minutes for our food to arrive. We enjoyed the food but it wasn't fantastic and after an hour and 45 minutes waiting the experience was ruined. Don't go here unless you are prepared for a long wait and don't trust the hostess.

Finally, after a week on the Outer Banks, a place to eat that was worth remembering. It's in a strip mall, so not prime location, but most importantly the food was excellent. I had the blackened snook sandwich special. The fish was perfectly broiled, the bun had an exceptional texture. Together with great seasoning and very nice home-cut fries it was a great lunch treat. My wife decided to go for the shrimp "not burger" and was equally excited. Definitely worth a stop next time we're back here.

Crowded but fun atmosphere with friendly, efficient service. Good draft beer and wine selections. Wide variety of good sounding menu items, but overpriced (Nag's Head on Memorial Day weekend, go figure.) Calamari was overdone and rubbery with a sauce that reminded me a bit of spicy thousand island dressing. Tuna with mango chutney barely warm, and chutney was mostly just under-ripe mangoes, and not much spice or other flavor. i don't mind paying $50 per person for a really good meal, but this was just average in fancy clothes. Given the other reviews, maybe they were just overwhelmed by the holiday weekend crowd.

Wow, what a great restaurant. The service is excellent and the food is unmatched on the Outer Banks. Two dishes that are our favorites are the calamari and the shrimp and grits. They offer a very extensive menu and great specials! A must try on the Outer Banks

just ate at blue moon. The food was good. Didnt have a taste for the pasta or the butter wine sauce that was on it. But thats just me being picky. The cheesesteak looked amazing. Also the wings were great. Would come back again.

Food was great... we had fish tacos, crab cakes, shrimp & grits, and fish & chips in our group and they were all tasty. Liked the atmosphere too! I wasn't expecting something this good from the outside. Good beer selection also.

Ate there today for the first time. The food was very tasty and well prepared. Great fish tacos!! The softshell crab salad looked wonderful too. Excellent iced tea. Service was attentive and professional. Retro strip mall ambiance with great rock music playing! I thoroughly enjoyed myself. When I go back and get the same wonderful food and service I will up the stars to 4

Had the best food experience of our trip at Blue Moon. Food was fresh and innovative. Service and beverages were top notch as well. No wonder this place is rated number 1...they deserve the ranking. Crab cake was phenomenal as were the calamari and fried green tomato apps. Location is a bit off (in a strip mall) but make the trip! it is worth tasting the chefs creations.

Decent ribeye but nothing special. Great blue cheese bread pudding with it. Service friendly but uneven. Worth a trip.

The food and service were awesome. The scallop appetizer with seaweed salad was to die for. My wife ate the chicken sandwich which was fresh and moist. My Not a Burger was incredible. We went back a second time. My wife had the spinach arugala salad with shrimp which she said was great. My fish tacos were scrumptious. This new OBX restaurant is a must go. Very friendly and attentive service.

This place is fabulous! Everything my husband and I ordered was out of this world. I especially love the jerk wings. A great place hidden from the main road.

Wonderful! Don't let the location fool you, this restaurant is first class. Get there early so you don't have to wait. We were told our wait would be an hour and fifteen minutes, but I think it was a bit shorter. It was worth the wait! Crab, asparagus and corn soup was stellar, as were the shrimp and grits. I love a restaurant with an open kitchen because it shows that they have nothing to hide. The bathrooms were very clean too.

My husband's parents have a house less than a half mile away from Blue Moon and we didn't even know about this place until last year because it's in a random strip mall and not impressive looking from the outside at all. But we saw that it got awesome reviews, so we tried it, and WOW. It's good. Really, really good. It is definitely in the running for the best restaurant in the entire Outer Banks in my opinion (from the ones I've been to, of course). The wait is going to likely be long, so prepare for that. There are only 2 of us, so we sit at the bar if something opens up, which helped cut down the wait time by about an hour the last time we went there. The place is small, so it would be great if they could expand eventually, but in any event, I have never had a bad meal there. Last week, I had corvina 2 times. I've never even had corvina before, but yeah, it was cooked to perfection. One time, it was accompanied by sweet potato risotto, which was amazing, and the next time, it came with an awesome blueberry jalapeno sauce.... mmm. Also, for fellow beer lovers: they have a few craft beers on tap but many more bottles, and we were pleased with the selection. But please don't feel the need to try this place - we don't need the wait to be any longer!

Awesome. Its not on the beach with views or anything but the food was awesome. Great oyster po-boy sandwich and fried calamari with a sauce that was different from the standard fare. Enjoy!

We happened upon this place by chance, and what a great find! It was a cold, rainy day at the beach, and the food was everything I was looking for. I started out with the chowder (perfect on a rainy day) and had the crab cake sandwich as an entree. The crab cake was full of lump crab meat. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was comfortable and cozy. It was everything we wanted and more!

I have a set list of places I eat at when I go to OBX. A friend talked me into trying this place. Now I have to add it to my list of favorites that I will eat at every time I go. Staff was friendly and funny. Just be sure to not pre-judge the place by what you see on the outside.

The food was excellent. We had the Seared Scallops for appetizer, then I had the Fish Tacos, the SO had a Crab Bisque. Service was great. The only hit on this place was the limited seating; the first night we went the wait was an hour forty minutes, so we left and came back the next night, when a thunderstorm kept the crowds away.

First of all, you gotta get here early or you gotta get patience! The bar seats about 10 and the restaurant about 20. And if you do wait, it is absolutely worth it. They dont take reservations...ift hey did it would be months longs during the summer I bet. The food was OUTSTANDING! The service was very good. I had a calamari app which was superb. It was served in a delicious sauce and the calamari was cooked just right. The others in my party had other apps which were all eqaully delicious. I had the crabcakes, one fried and one broiled and they were the best I've had in a very long time. My friends had the tilefish special because the fish came in of the truck straigh from the docks about 20 min after we were seated. It was great. The shrimp and grits was also something special. Being foodie pigs, from DC, we had to have dessert. Once again , there were no misses. I had a coconut cream pie slice that I would kill to have again. This place, from first appearances seems like a hole in the wall eatery. And it is a hole in the wall but anything butr a plain eatery. It is a simple and friendly place with something speacial going on in the kitchen. The prices were moderate but well worth it...I cant find our receipt but I think it was close to 4 bills for the 6 of us and considering all the food and drinks it was a steal; a delicious bit if food criminality that would be hard to top anywhere on the OBX. So have dinner early one night and I promise you will thank me. If you have a week or more along the OBX and you like well prepared, tasty, creative and beautifuly presented food then you MUSt come here. If you dont care so much, go somewhere else and let people who appreciate great food enjoy this specail little place.

We went here 3 times in the week I spent on the OBX. Very good food. The chef's had some great specials and the reggae music pumping from the sound system was a perfect compliment to the place. I ordered the caesar salad with tuna, the tuna was $4 extra. I was expecting the usual: maybe 8oz of meat, cut in bite size pieces. But they hooked it up with about a whole pound of fresh tuna steak, seared on the outside and raw in the middle, just how I like it.

This was our favorite dinner in obx. Had a 30minute wait, but there was a patio with benches outside so we had a place to wait. Friendly service like most restaurants here. Had salmon entrée which was great. Other had shrimp which was also great. Would definately return!

Outstanding! We had apps consisting of Buffalo shrimp, and then a mussels and clams fromage bleu special. Buffalo shrimp were cooked to perfection, not very spicy, but still very good. The mussels and clams were a little over cooked, but the garlic white wine sauce, though a little salty, was very good. It also had a bit of spinach mixed into the sauce, which really made it a healthy app :-). It came with 2 large slice of garlic bread which were great for soaking up the sauce. I had the shrimp & grits as my entree, and it was loaded with flavor. I couldn't finish it, and am really looking forward to it for lunch today. Barb had the beach burger, which was a little small (prob 1/4lb), but cooked to order. Fries are homemade, hand cut, and crispy. There fries come with an Old Bay seasoning, which really like. The kids had steak sandwiches, which were served with choice of toppings, including Cheez Wiz (Philly style), and nice crusty bread. I'm looking forward to finishing that off today, along with my grits. Service was fine. Overall, I recommend this place.

Very good! Have been ordering carryout from Blue Moon for a couple years now. Finally dined there in newly expanded space during recent trip. Fish Tacos and Voodoo Pasta were excellent. Staff was great. Music over speaker system was too loud though. Would definitely eat there again.
